Washington, March 8.The diplo mats, especially .the ambassadors, are denouncing in all languages, but with only one idea, the discourtesy with which they think they were treated by the supreme court justices at the in auguration of President Eoosevelt on Saturday, aud the whole subject of of ficial precedence at state functions has been reopened. The supreme court justices were in tensely indignant when they were held back "by an officious young officer at a White House reception some years ago until after the members of the dip lomatic corps, including the army of secretaires and attaches from South and Central America, had been presented to the president. The difficulty was smoothed over with much trouble and a personal apology from the president. Justices "Get Even." But the justices were not fully ap peased for the injury to their dignity. H/HMMUflDMITTriTTXIllTA Count Cassini, then dean o the corps, and his fellow ambassadors were sus picious of trouble and insisted on a promise from the committee on arrange ments that they would be given th* post of honor thruout the ceremonies on the theory that they represent the persons of their sovereigns and there fore rank next to the president. This promise was kept in the assign ment or seats in the senate, the ambas sadors being placed on the right of the presiding officer of the senate, while the members of the supreme court sat on his left. The ambassadors were happy, then, but they were dismayed and angry a few minutes later when the procession started for the outside stand to inaug urate the president. Chief Justice Pul ler led the way with the president. Then came the committee on arrange ments and, as tho by preconcerted plan, the assistant justices fell in behind them, leaving nothing for the disgusted ambassadors to do but bring up the rear. Escorted by Senate Page. The diplomats were further angered when they were told that a senate page would show them the way to the stand. They had expected to be escorted by no one less than the sergeant-at-arms of the senate, and probably by a com mittee of senators. Bather than create a scene, the ambassadors accepted the situation and followed the triumphant justices, but what they are saying about it could not be well told in English, for their own languages are much more ex pressive. They have advised their governments that they were not given the precedence to which they are entitled, but it is JEFFERSON FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY Principal office, Philadelphia, Pa.
