HOLBEIN AND TITIAN
To One the World Was a Pilgrimage,
to Other a Pageant.
January St. Nicholas.
The genius of Holbein also blossomed
early. In 1515, when he was 18 years
old, he moved from Augsburg, -where
he was born, to Basel, the center of
learning, whose boast was that every
house it contained at least one
le irned mani In 1520 he was admitted
to citizenship at Basel and to member
si ip in the painters'guild good proof,
he was only 23, or his unusual abil
it r.
But the times were lean ones for the
linter. Holbein found himself in
ed of money, and accordingly set out
for Loudon with a letter or introduc
tnn to Sir Thomas More, the king's
1 ancellor.
"Master Haunce," as the English
illed him, arrived in England toward
tl close of 1526. During this first
isit to England he painted portraits of
I iny of the leading men of the day.
it two 3*?ar later, in consequence of
an outbreak of the plague, he returned
Basel, only to be driven back td
1 ugland in 1531 by poverty and the
I ath of his old friends.
By 1537 Holbein had come to the
tice of Henry VIII., and was estab
hed as court painter, a position which
he held until his death. This seems to
I ave occurred during another visitation
of the plague in 1543 for at this date
knowledge of the great artist ceases.
"When he died or where he was buried
is not known.

What a contrast between his life and

From The Journal Bureau, Colorado Building,
Washington.
Washington, April 21.The consump
tion of tea, coffee and alcoholic bever
ages i'n the principal countries of the
world is presented in a table just pre
pared by the department of commerce
and labor. The figures show that the
United Kingdom is first in the consump
tion of tea the United States, first in
the consumption of coffee Germany,
first in the consumption of beer Rus
sia, first in the consumption of whisky
and other distilled spirits and
first in the consumption1
of wines.France, Sta
tistics are presented relative to the
Uwited Statese, the United Kingdom,
France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Italy.
Austria-Hungary, Portugal, Chile and
Argentina.
Tea consumption in the twelve coun
tries named aggregated in 1904, or the
latest available year, over 510,000,000
pounds. Of this, the consumption in
the United Kingdom was 256% mill
ions Russia, 1271-3 milio'nfc United
States, 109 2-3 millions Germany, 7
millions: while in no other country for
which these statistics are available is
the annual consumption as much as
8,000,000 poundsthat of Austria-Hun
gary being 2 2-8 million pounds France,
less than 2 million pounds: Chile,
about 2 million pounds Argentina, 1 4-5
millions: Spain*, 333,000 pounds, and
Italy, 115,500 pounds.
Yankees and Coffee.
Of coffee, the world's consumption is
approximately 2% billion pounds. In
this the United States, as already in
dicated, holds flta first place, with a to

6% millions in Portugal, and
millions in Chile.
The statistics of beer consumption are
available for only eight countries, with
a total of 5,753,000,000 gallons an
nually. Germany had a total consump
tion of 1,783,000,000 the United
Kingdom, 1,501,000,000 gallons the
United States, 1,494,000,000 Austria,
492,000,000: France, 289,000,000 Hun
gary, 38,833,000 and Italy, 6,750,000.
Russians and Whisky.
The consumption of whisky, brandy
and other distilled spirits in the eight
countries for which statistics are avail
able amounted to 687,000,000 gallons
that for Russia being set down at 174,-
000,000 gallons Germany, 124,333,333
the United States, 321, 000,000 Aus
tria, 82,500,000 France, 72,333,333 the
United Kingdom. 58,333,333 Hungary,
43.500,000 and Italy, 11,000,000.
Wine consumption in the nine coun
tries for which statistics are presented
amounts to 3,090,000,000 gallons aiv
nually, principally in the Latin coun
tries. France alone consumes 1,343,-
000,000 gallons annually Italy, 928,500,-
000 Spain, 331,500,000 and Austria
Hungary, 231,000,000., Figures for
Russia are not available. Germany con
sumes 124,000,000 gallons of wine an
nually: Portugal, nearly. 72,000,000 the
United States, 43,333,883,333 and the
United Kingdom, 16,fifi6,666.
Britons and Tea.
The per capita consumption of the
various beverages in the principal coun
tries presents some sharp contrasts.
Thus, in the per capita consumption of
tea the United States is credited with
but 1.84 pounds as against 6 pounds for
the United Kingdom while in the other
countries presented the annual con
sumption per head of population is in
each case less than 1 pound Russia be
ing credited with 0.92 Chile, 0.62
Argentina, 0.37 Portugal, 0.14 Ger
many, 0.12, and France and Austria
Hungary, each, 0.06 of one pound\
In the per capita consumption of
coffee the relative rank of the countries
named is: United States, 11.75 pounds
per head of population Germany, 6.65
pounds France, 4.29 pounds Argen
tina, 3.81 pounds Austria-Hungary,
2.33 pounds Chile, 1.72 pounds Spain,
1.18 pounds Italy, 1.17 pounds the
United Kingdom, 0.69 pound, and Rus
sia, 0.15 pound.
Beer to Each Man.
Of beer the per capita consumption in
the latest available year was as fol
lows: United Kingdom, 35.42 gallons
(thus exceeding Germany with her 30.77
gallons) Austria-Hungary, 20.36 gal
lons United States, 18.28 gallons:
France, '7.41 gallons, and Russia, 1.08
gallons.
The per capita consumption of whis
ky and spirituous liquors is far more
uniform in the countries under consid
eration: Austria with 3.09 gallons per
capita, Hungary, 2.19 gallons, and Ger
many, 2.11 gallons, being the only
countries with an annual consumption
in excess of 2 gallons per capita and
Italy, with 0.34 gallon per capita, was
the only country to fall below 1 gallon
in its annual consumption per capita.
The United States (1.48 gallons),
United Kingdom (1.38 gallons), France
(1.85 gallons), and Russia (1.26 gal
lons) differ little in their per capita
consumption of distilled spirits. In
wine, however, the per capita consump
tion varies greatly among the various
countries, from a minimum of 0.39 of 1
gallon in the United Kingdom to 34.73
gallons in France, while the other coun
tries, arranged in the ascending scale,
stand, United States, 0.53 of 1 gallon
Germany, 2.08 gallons Hungary, 3.75
gallons: Austria, 5.85 gallons Portu
gal, 14.12 gallons Spain, 17.82 gallons,
and Italy, 28.06 gallons.
METAL HEELS FOB HOUSE
Madame to Eival Marquises of Grand
Monarch's Day.
New York Press.
Heels must not match the spring
time's slippersfor house wear, at any
rate. She who incases her trilbies in
scarlet leather will balance her fairy
weight on Louis Quatorze affairs of
gleaming gold. Gold slippers, on the
other handT are to have red heels. Green
will be offset with brown and pale blue
with silver. Madame and her friends,
when they foregather in the boudoir
for a morning chat, will look like a
bevy of directoire dames or a flock of
marquises from the court of the Grand
Monarch. Everything in the pedal line
is to be strikingly French. Those who
talked against high heels years ago
will have another opportunity to wax
eloquent, for it is foretold heels will
be higher than ever in this year of
grace and gracefulness^may it not be
added, graciousnessf Certainly of
goodness-graciousness, judging from the
astonishing daring of ,the advance

WEAR HISTORIC GEMS
Mrs. Astor's Spanish Diadem and Mary
Queen of Scots' Pearls.
New York Press.
Again the rage for old jewels and
jewelry, which crops out every few
years, is in full swing, and society
women are diving deep in their treasure
caskets for relics of bygone days. Most
of the ancient trinkets have histories
important only to their owners, of
course, but here and there a New York
er is the proud possessor of gems that
once played their part in the chronicles
of the mighty. Mrs. John Jacob Astor
has a diadem that belonged to Spanish
royalty not so many years ago. It is
more gorgeous than any tiara seen in
the Metropolitan's shimmering semi
lune, and Mrs. Astor's friends say it
could not have been more becoming to
Hispaniola's haughtiest royal dame
than it is to the former Philadelphian.
Another American, the Countess de
Castellane, possesses a crown that used
to be among the personal keepsakes of
the same country's last Queen Isabella.
Mrs. Bradley Martin includes among
her priceless trinkets stones that a cen
tury or so ago glittered among the
crown jewels of France. Their mates
are worn by Mrs.'Bonynge of London,
while Lady Waterford boasts a row
of pearls that adorned the round throat
of Mary of Scotland before that snowy
span was severed by the headsman's ax.
