SHERIFF SHOOTS
FLEEING BOBBER
Chambers of Steele County Kills
Ivan Tomajis, Late of
Minneapolis.
Speoial to The Journal.
Owatoima, Minn., May 12.While
resisting arrest this morning for high
way robbery, Ivan Tomajis was shot
and killed by Sheriff Chambers.
Tomajis made no statement, and lit
tle is known of him. He and Martin
Rukavina and Martin Arnik came from
Minneapolis' last night and spent the
night in a bam. The first two learned
that Arnik had $400 and was return
ing to Slavonia to bring over, his fam
ily, whereupon they held hirii up and
took the money from the lining of his
trousers and vest.
The robbers went east and Arnik
informed Sheriff Chambers, who took a
train "to Havana and found the robbers,
who turned and fled. The sheriff fired
three shots wild and then shot Tomajis
in the back.
Tho men have been living in Minne
apolis, Tomajis at 30 Fir"st street. Bu
kavina at 30 Water street and Arnik
at the Minnesota hotel.
Bukavina says the money was taken
originally from him and he merely re
gained possession of it and is not guilty
of robbery.
SPEECH MAY GOST
MORTON HIS PLACE
President Is Highly Displeased
with Secretary's Address Be
fore Railroad Men.
By W. W. Jermane.
Washington, May 12.An able
bodied rumor is current here today that
Secretary Morton may have to retire
from the cabinet as a result: of his re
cent address before the International
Railway congress. The president re
garded the address as being so far from
an expression of his policy that he
wired Secretary Taft to reply to it be
fore the same body, and the president
himself took the question up in his
Denver and Chicago addresses.
Just what there is in this latest Mor
ton story cannot be ascertained, at pres
ent.
If Morton should remain in? the cabi
net it,will be, so it is said, because of
the president's fear that his removal at
this time and for the cause stated might
be misinterpreted by the country at
large, and do more harm than good to
the administration's plans.
That \^h:. president is highly dis-
pleasedyQver Morton's course is general
ly admitted.

SUNSHINE WILL GIVE CROPS A
REMARKABLE BOOST.
Snow Upon the Wheat Declared a Good
Thing by Old-Timers, Who Point to
1888 With Its BumperCorn Plant
ing in Iowa Somewhat Belated.
Special to The Journal.
Fargo, N. D., May 12.This section
of North Dakota has had about three
inches of precipitation this week. In
some wheat fields there is standing
water, but with clear, warm weather no
damage is expected. The moisture in
the central and western sections has
been even heavier than here. Persons
who were howling about a drouth two
weeks ago are now earing gum boots
and praying for sunshine. The moisture
has sunk deeply into the ground and
ith higher temperature there should be
a remarkable growth of the crops.
Devils Lake, N. D., May 12.A fierce
blizzard raged here Tuesday night an
Wednesday morning. The storm was
preceded and followed by showers of
rain. One foot of snow was recorded.
Not since May 22, 1883, has such a
storm visited theis section so late in the
spring season. In the spring of 1883,
when wheat stood six inches out of the
groun'd, a heavy, snow fell, and the
greatest crop ever reaped was out in
the fall of that year.
Most all of the wheat has been sown
and a bumper crop should result.
Pembina, N. D., May 12.Many
wheat fields are covered with water.
About one-half of the crop is to be
planted yet, also all oats and other
grains, and it will take at least a week
before any plowing or seeding can be
doWe. The outlook for crops sown are
not favorable on account or the cold,
frosty weather and too much rain.
Webster, S. D., May 12.Following
three days of heavy rains, the weather
turned colder and two inches of snow
fell yesterday afternoon. This will
cause some loss of stock on the Port
Sisseton military reservation, Beach
Rathbun having already reported sev
enteen head of cattle dead.
Iowa Falls, Iowa, May 12.Continued
heavy rains have interfered materially
with corn-planting and work has been
practically suspended. Farmers who
aim to have most of their corn in May
15 are somewhat discouraged. Pastures
and small grain are thriving.
Albert Lea, Minn., May 12.Nearly
three inches of rain fell here this week
and vegetation of all kinds is making
rapid progress. Grain is showing up
well and meadow and pastures are grow
ing finely. A large acreage will be
planted to corn and potatoes.
Cooperstown, N. D., May 12.About
a foot of snow fell here and every, one
is feeling good over the splendid pros
pects for a bountiful crop. Old farm
ers say that a good fall of snow after
seeding is a genuine booster for the
crops.
Hoople, N. D.. May 12.About six
inches of snow fell here. Seeding is
nearly all done.
COUNT FLED WITH RICH GEMS.
New York, May 12.The West Thir
teenth street police station harbors a no
bleman. He tried last night to run away
with a $1,500 diamond brooch from the
burglar-proof diamond "pen" in the jew
elry store of Lebolt & Co., and actually
did manage to lose himself in the crowd
of Broadway for a few minutes. When
asked his name for police record he hand
ed over the desk an engraved card bear
ing a heraldic device and th6 name "Raggi
Conte Carlo."
McCLEARY ON ART QUEST.
Washington, May 12.Representative
McCleary cf Minnesota left for Europe
last night for a trip on the continental
capitals in the interest of the Lincoln Me
morial association. He will get views and
ideas concerning the erection of the pro
posed Lincoln memorial which will be
