FAMOUS MEN ON
CHORUS ROSTER
CHRISTIANIA, STUDENT SINGERS'
NOTABLE HISTORY.
Organization Has Taken Lead In Choral
Music of Norway for Sixty Years
Kjerulf Its First DirectorInspired
Poets and ComposersRecord of
Events in Which I Has Participated.
A glorious history lies behind the
chorus of the students of the University
of Christiania, who sing in Minneap
olis May 25. Founded by J. D. Beh
rens and Halfdan Kierult, it was the
first chorus organized in Norway, and
since 1845 it has been intimately asso
ciated with all the musicians and com
Eosers of Norway, great and small. Its
rst public appearance was at the funer
al of Henrik Wergeland, the great poet
and patriot of Norway. Its first con
cert inspired Ole Bull to compose his
immortal Saeterbesoeget.'' The stu
dents sang at the bier of Johan S.
"Welhaven. They inspired Halfdan
Kjerulf and Behrens, Grieg, Nordraak,
Reissiger and Groendahl to weave mu
Bic: Bjornson and Ibsen to write songs
which they popularized in Norway and
made known to the entire world.
They took the lead in choral music
in Norway and by numerous concert
tours abroad enhanced the fame of Nor
way's composers and acquired a high
name for themselves. Among its active
members have been Ulrik V. Koren, now
president of the Norwegian Lutheran
synod in America Tartvlg Lassen, the
journalist- Hand Gude, the famous
painter Frederik Beckvold, the popu
lar barytone: Thorwald Lammers, O. A.
Groendahl, the composer and conductor
Fritz Thaulow, the distinguished land
scape artist Rolf Hammer and Johannes
Berg-Hansen, the opera singers, who,
BOW accompany the students as soloists.
Upsala organized its famous chorus
$n 1827, Lund followed in 1831, Copen
hagen in 1839, but it was not until 1845
that the students of the University of
Christiania formally organized their fa
mous chorus. Incidentally, it is now
sixty years old, the accepted birthday
being July 10, when the laws were
adopted. Previous to its organization
there had been maintained for two
years a students' quartet founded by
Behrens, and which was the true birth
of the choruB. At their first sanger
itest the students did not sing at all,
'because the Upsala boys sang so well
,4hat the Norwegians shrank from the
dnevitable comparison. They achieved
a reputation for the power they put into
their hurrahs, which was the forerun
ner of the college yell, and their "hur
rah" caused almost as much comment
s the Upsala songs.
The first public concert, Jan. 13, 1846,
,jwas arranged by a committee on which
were Jorgen Moe, Welhaven, Monrad,
Kjerulf and Behrens. Kjerulf was the
[first director, but left the students in
3849 when he went to foreign lands, and
then Behrens took the baton, -which he
wielded for forty years, handing it over
in 1869 to his worthy successor, the
present conductor, O. A. Groendahl.
In 1851 the students joined those of
Xiund and Copenhagen at Christiania,
and the next year the Upsala singers
came to Christiania and carried all be
fore them.
Among the most notable events in
which the chorus has participated are
the following:
1853Sangarfest at Horten.
1855Tenth anniversary festival.
1855Visit to Upsala and sangarfest at
Frenkshald
1859Sangarfest at Arendal.

tiania.

THRE E ARCTIC EXPEDITIONS
William Ziegler and Duke of Orleans
Are Recruiting Norwegian Sailors.
William R, Champ and Dr. Oliver L.
Fassig left London for Bergen, Nor
way, last Saturday to complete the de
tails for the relief of the expedition
headed by Anthony Fiala of Brooklyn,
N. Y. The latter is on board the
steamer America, fitted out by William
Ziegler of New York to reach the north
pole by way of Franz Josef Land. Mr.
Champ said that his vessel, the Terra
Nova, will proceed as rapidly as pos
sible to Cape Flora, Franz Josef Land,
where he expected to find the records
of' the Fiala expedition and perhaps
some members of the party, A second
relief ship, on which Dr. Fassig will
be a passenger, will proceed from Nor
way direct to Shannon island and
search the east coast of Greenland.
The Duke of Orleans left England
this week for Bergen, whence he will
sail immediately after his arrival there
for the polar regions, bent on scientific
research. Incidentally he may assist
in the relief of the Fiala expedition.
CONCESSIONS TO FINNS
Czar Suspends Some Obnoxious Meas
ures Against Province.
Emperor Nicholas has directed, the
governor general, Prince Obolenski, to
suspend until further notice the execu
tion of the most unpopular of all the
measures that had been ordered, name
ly, the decree making it compulsory
for the Finnish recruits to take the
oath of allegiance to Nicholas as auto
crat of all the Eussias instead of as
grand duke of Finland, and, worse still,
making them liable to serve in Rus
sian regiments under Russian degimen
tal officers, outside of Finland, instead
of serving in purely Finnish regiments,
commanded by officers of their own
race, and called upon to serve beyond
the borders of the grand duchy only
in the event of war. Those obnoxious
measures, diametrically opposed to the
prerogatives accorded to the Finnish
people by their constitution, which the
czar, like all his predecessors since
Alexander I, has solemnly sworn to
observe, had contributed more than
anything else to embitter the people
of Finland against Emperor Nicholas
and against Russia. Another conces
sion made by the emperor is the re
establishment of the irremovability of
the judges in Finland and the repeal
of the decree rendering them liable to
summary dismissal by the governor
general or the Russian government in
case they incurred the displeasure of
either the one or the other.
CLEVER SOUNDING DEVICE
Engineer Bergraff Makes Use of Elec
tricity Instead of Lead.
fc_ A leadless sounding apparatus has
vee& invented by, a Norwegian engi-
L,
neer named Bergraff. The underlying
principle is one of acoustics, involv
ing the propagation of a sound wave
from the vessel to the bottom of the
sea and back and the measurement of
the time required for this. The process
is really the measurement of the time
between the making of the sound and
the receipt of the echo sent back from
the ocean's floor. Both the sending
of the sound and the registering or
the receipt are done by electrical appa
latus.
Galician Laborers in Sweden.
One hundred Galicians, mostly wo

accompanied by 'children of tender
years, but were strong and in good
spirits.

Oscar Will Rule Soon.
It is anticipated in many quarters
that King Oscar will terminate Crown
Prince Gustaf's regency on June 1.
The presumption is that he takes this
course in order to assume responsibil
ity for sanctioning the Norwegian
consular law, which will undoubtedly
pass the storthing by that time. This
act is certain to offend the Swedes

Norwegian Clergy Protest.
The efforts of the Swedish clergy to
arrange a convention of clergymen
for next fall may be abandoned. The
Norwegian clergy thru their executive
committee has decided not to partici
pate as long as Sweden does not fully
recognize the complete sovereignty of
the Norwegian people, and have de
clined the invitation.

minister at Stockholm, will remain in
Sweden for some time, altho his stay is

not unlikely that he will publish an
