CO-OPERATION LIKELY ON
State Drainage Commission. Offers to

Reclaiming Vast Swamp Bach: of Ro

The state drainage commission is
ready to go into partnership with the
Great Northern railroad in draining
and reclaiming land owned by both, but
it is not willing to pay the entire ex
pense of a ditch which will benefit rail
road as well as state land.
The commission met in the governor's
office this morning and considered a
number of ditch applications. Among
them was one proposed ditch in Kittson
county which would benefit a large
amount of state land, and also a tract
belonging to the Great Northern. The
commissioners are willing to make an
arrangement with the railroad by which
the ditch will be dug and the expense
divided proportionately, and President
James J. pill was invited to meet with
the commission this afternoon.
The commission decided to make a
beginning on the great swamp in Eos
eau county. The first move is to deepen
the channel of Roseau river, which will
lower the level of Roseau lake about
four feet, and drain a large area of
state land. Engineer George A. Ralph
was directed to do this work, and the
river 30b is expected to cost $12,000 to
The commission also ordered plans
made for the Kimberley ditch in Aitkin
county, to dredge the wing river ditch
in Otter Tail county, and allowed $5,000
for the betterments of the Kandiyohi
state ditch. Mr. Ralph was ordered to
view the No. 17 ditch Wilkin county
with a view to bettering it. These un
dertakings will use up the greater part
of the $30,000 annual appropriation al
lowed for the next two years. Appli
cations for two ditches in Kittson ooun
tv and for the Blind lake ditch in Ait
kin county were deferred for later con

The railroad and warehouse commis

hay inspection law. The dealers are
ready to co-operate in building a cen
tral warehouse where all hay consign
ments may be received and inspected,
and they say that unless this is done
it will take twenty or thirty inspectors
to cover all the yards and make the
inspections. The railroads are not will
ing to deliver hay at such a warehouse,
however, without imposing a switch
ing charge, and on this point there is
a hitch. The officers of the commis

At this time of the year many auto
mobile experts are looking ahead to a
final test Detween the automoble and
the locomotive. Already the automo
bile has made faster time than any
locomotive, but there is danger ahead
for all concerned in such races. This
season of the year reminds us that we
are all more or less in a race for life in
which death overtakes many who are
run down and in a weakened condi
