NORTHWEST FIELDS FOB GEOLOGISTS With the Topographic Engineers, They Will Begin Work Soon. By W. W. Jermane. Washington, May 26.Numerous field parties of topographic engineers and geologists are now fitting out in' Washington, preparing to resume their work in the various states between June 1 and 15. The hydrographic engineers of the geological survey, under whose jurisdiction the other two branches of field work are done, are already in the field, measuring streams. Their work begins with the passing of the ice, and is not concluded until the ice comes again in the late fall. Probably the most important work to bo done in Minnesota during the com ing season is the topographic survey of the remainder of Hen'nepin county, which will, cover the., territory imme diately west of the city of Minneapolis. Arrangements for this survey were ma.de DV former Eepresentative Lind, before he left Washington in March. This party- will also assist in charting Lake Minnetonka, for which provision was made ,in the last river aWd harbor bill. This work will be in charge of Kobert Muldrow. Work in Other States. Topographic work in North Dakota will De in charge of Basil Duke, and will cover an area of 225 miles around Bismarck, the results of which will be published as the "Bismarck sheet." In Wisconsin the "Mazomanie sheet," in Iowa and Dane counties, and the "Sparta sheet," in' Monroe county, will be surveyed. .In'South Dakota, Chester Irvine will have charge of a party which will make a topographic survey of the area about Belle Fourclie, adjoining the regular "Black Hills sheet." The latter sheet, which was begun last season, will be completed this summer. An area of about 900 square miles, including the Cable and Philipsburg mining districts, adjoining Anaconda on the west, will be surveyed a'n'd mapped in Montana, and preliminary work on the Moccasin mountain mining district in the vicinity of Lewiston, will be done by a party in charge of H. L. Baldwin. Geological Branch. In the geological branch of the sur vey's work, nothing original will done in Minnesota this year. Profes sor Van Hyse, of the University of Wis consin, will prepare his final report on the geology of the Iron Range, bringing the work up to date and summarizing the results of his investigation. I Wisconsin the investigation of the lead and zinc deposits in the southwestern part of the state will be continued, un der H. Bain. The region to be cov ered is in the vicinity of Lancaster, west of Mineral Point,"where the work was carried on last season. Some work will also be done in the glaciated re gion near Milwaukee and Janesville. Lignite in North Dakota. Probably the most important investi gation the geologistss will make in the northwest this summer, will be the ex ploration ..of the lignite deposits in North Dakota. The tests made at St. Louis last year demonstrated that this coal produced a richer quality of pro ducer gas than any other coal discov ered in this country, which makes it especially valuable ior running gas en gines. The development of the lignite depos its wilL have an' important bearing on the extension of irrigation work in North Dakota, as the production of cheap gas will lessen the cost of operat ing the pumping stations of the irriga tion works,' and thus make the projects feasible. Mr. Campbell of the geo logical survey, and Professor Leonard of the state university will have charge of this work. Professor Dartom, whose report on the underground waters of the flished jreat plains region has just been pub will extend his investigations into" North Dakota, in the vicinity of Fargo and Gasselton. Oil in the Black Hills. In South Dakota the geological in vestigations will be in the vicinity of the Black Hills, with a view to the dis covery of oil, which has appeared in several localities in small quantities. Director Wolcott the survey will himself do a month Jsof field work in west ern Montana, with a view to the de velopment of the gold,- silver and lead deposits. The work in that state is in general charge of Professor Calkins. The hydrographic investigations of the survey are not confined to localities, as are the other branches, but extend over several states in some instances. For instance, the hydographic work in Minnesota and Wisconsin is in general charge of W. Hanna, -jvho is in per sonal charge of the work in Wisconsin, while Professor E. F.' Chandler of the North Dakota university is in charge in Minnesota and North Dakota. I South Dakota D. Comstock and It. F. Walter, district engineer of the re clamation service, are making the in vestigation, and in Montana L. R. Stock man has charge of the work. 'Waterflow Measurements. The purpose of the hydrographic work in the state east of the Missouri river is to ascertain the waterpower possi bilities, and stations are established on all the streams to measure the flow of the water at all seasons. All the stations in operation last year in Minnesota will be maintained this year. The reports of these measure ments, while almost entirely technical, are eagerly sought by capitalists and others desiring to establish power plants for the development of electricity.. The hydrographic bureau also maintains a laboratory for the analysis pf the waters of the "various streams, .Nand these analyses are furnished to cities seek ing a pure water supply. West of the Missouri river, the hydro graphic investigations are carried on almost entirely with a view to ascer taining the possibilities for storage for reclamation purposes. No stream is too small for measuremerit, and the en gineers are always on the lookout for a possible supply for irrigation reservoirs, from which.canals and ditches can be run to reclaim the arid and semiarid lands in their vicinity.
