Growth of the District, in Population and in Business, Made Necessary a, Separate 'Change New Building Will at Twenty-first Avenue N Nofth Minneapolis is. to be recog nized by the Northwestern Telephone company by the construction of a new branch office to be known as the North Side station. There has been no sec tion of the city which has shown a more remarkable growth when based on its increased telephone business, than has the North Side. For this reason the company will build the new branch which will care for North Side calls. Altho the plans have not been def initely decided on as yet, the new build ing will be fully in keeping with the growing importance of the North Side and sufficient to care for a considerable additional increase. The building will vibe a handsome structure fully modern and up to date in every way and will cost in the vicinity of $21,000. This will not include the price of the lot or the expensive equipment of switch boards and lines. The site chosen is the northeast cor v.ner of Twenty-first avenue N and Bry ant, which is the center of the com pany's North Side system. This step has not been decided upon in a hurry, but how that it has been I found necessary, it will be taken up at I once. For some time the residents and business men of the North Side have felt that they had not adequate tele phone facilities. Much of the business is inter-North Side traffic, which will be mu ch improved now that it will not be necessary to carry everything thru the down town exchange. Residents deal with North Side merchants, North Side people have their friends and so cial acquaintances among North Side people, and the business men deal with one another. These calls form a consid erable part of the total business of the main exchange and while giving the North Side better service, the new ex i change will result in lessening the bur *den on the do wn town exchange. A official of the telephone company i speaking of the extension said: "We found that this new exchange was actually needed in order to care for ur growing business on the North Side. For some time we have had several constructi on crews busy in that section alone and the business must be cared for. W have our south, east and cen tral exchanges, so $why not': a North Side station? Business, men are increas ing their telephone equipment and "are demanding a correspondingly increased service. Residences are being fitted with phones every day and must be cared for. Moreove r, people are coming to depend more and more on telephonic fcommuilication, which greatly increases the number of calls and the volume of P" work. "The task of fitting up and wiring the new exchange will be enormous. *The work must be clone rapidly, yet i-jnust'be absolutely correct. Washington,- June 7.The govern ment-is having trouble in bringing to trial the politicians who are mixed up iw the land fraud cases. A remarkable state* of affairs exists out in Oregon, where Senator John Mitchell, and both members of the house from that state have been indicted for conspiracy to defraud the government in land deals President Roosevelt became so con cerned a couple of weeks ago over the peculiar maneuvers of influential politi cians out in Portland, who were work ing with the evident purpose 0 prevent in'g a fair trial of Mitchell and the others, that Attorney Gener al Moody sent Assistant Attorney Gener al Eobb out there to take a look at the lay of things. The United States judge for the Port land district, Judge Ballinger, recently died, and there are a number of .candi dates for his place. Owing to the bad ly mixed state of politics in Oregon, the president did not know whose recom mendation to take in filling the vacancy. Judge to Chosen. One of Mr. Robb's duties on his west ern trip was to size up the various can didates for the federal judgeship and make a report to the Washington au thorities of what he thought of them. A the new judge will try Senator Mit chell and the other conspirators, it is highly important that a man be ap pointed who will see that the ends of -justice are not defeated. Judge de Have a of San Francisco is now on the bench at Portland, but it is Wot at all certain that he will be retained there thru the approaching trials. These are set for July, and the president will doubtless name a man to succeed Judge Ballinger, during the next two or three weeks. Ousted by President' I has been necessary for President Roosevelt to take extreme measures with several federal officeholders in Oregon as a result of their attempts to {areve'n'tr the punishment of the indicted gafters. Former United States District Attor ney Hall was peremptorily removed by order of the president, because he showed no disposition to bring Mitchell to tria l. Hail was succeeded by Fran- not want their lines interfered with during this part of the .work, so much of it will be done at night when there are few calls. Every detail of the in side station work will be completed and ready for business before we begin the work-of connecting up. "The building will probably be of ornamental brick and will have.a pleas ing exterior design. Every accommoda tion will be installed both for our em ployees and for the public. There will be a handsome office and public call station and special attention will be pa id to the toll department for the out side calls. Every improvement in the way of recently invented -equipment will be. adopted and when the work is complet e' the North Side will have as fine a branch exchange" as there is an y where.
