PROTESTS PAYMENT State May Have to Sue Milwaukee for Back Taxes. After two months spent in checking over the books of the Milwaukee road in Chicago, E. W. McGrew of the pub lic examiner's department has reported about $10,000 of errors and omissions in gross earnings tax reports to the state The Milwaukee was checked over thoro ly once before, and the amounts in question are all recent. There is a great deal of controversy over the meaning of "gross earnings." The companies have admitted the justice of payment in many cases, but in this instance the Milwaukee disputes pay ment. The items have been referred to the attorney general for his opin ion. If he agrees with the public ex aminer's department, suits will be brought to collect the amount. Large amounts are collected every year from the railroads thru the work of the special examiner. The work began in 1902, when the legislature gave authority for the work, and it was prosecuted by S. T. Johnson, then public examiner. Mr. McGrew was se cured at that time and has confined himself to that work nearly ever since, recovering a good many thousands every year.
