18 t&l SYNOD DELEGATES i ARRIVE AT DENVER ^Important Issues Before Meeting: of Swedish Lutheran Augus tana Church. Speci_l to The Journal. Denver, Col., June 14.The Minne sota delegates to the annual meeting of the Swedish Lutheran Augustana synod, which convenes here today, reached the city late last night. A del egation from the local church, headed by Dr. G. A. Brandelle, its pastor, was at the station to receive them and as sist them in finding their quarters. The Minnesota contingent constitutes a large and very influential part of the national body, whose president is the old Minnesota pioneer clergyman, Dr. E. N Norelius of Goodhue county, who has been in active work since 1856. Today the graduates, sixteen in number, of the theological seminary of Eock Island, 111., who are candidates for ordination next Sunday, are being examined. Six other young men who have not taken the prescribed theolog ical course, but have recommendations from some state conference, will also be examined for ordination. Nine of the candidates who came from the the ological seminary, received their col lege training in Gustavus Adolphus college at St. Peter. Four of the can didates have calls to Minnesota. Proposition to Merge. The exacutive committee of the synod *has already been in session to form the basis of the synod's deliberations. A lively debate is expected on a proposi tion to merge the home mission work of the synod -with. tHat of tne general coun cil of which the Augustana is an affili ated part. Hitherto the Augustana synod has been entirely independent in its home mission work, but it is ex pected that at this meeting a plan will be presented looking toward the cen tralization of control of the mission work of the various Lutheran bodies. Aside from the question of the wis dom and practicability of this plan it is certain to bring up the language ques tion which has alreadv become a diffi cult one in the non-fenglish speaking Lutheran bodies. Any radical proposi tion will inevitably raise the question in the synod here of breaking off all relations -with, the general council. The executive committee recommends that a committee be appointed to work for a large endowment fund for the Augus tana college and theological seminary at Bock Island, 111. Room for a Disagreement. An effort will be made to give the financial secretary of Augustana college the right to deal directlv with congrega tions who are delinquent in their an nual dues. This will meet with pro tests from any who are jealously guard ing the rights of the individual confer ences. Recommendation is made to the synod that the property, which for many years has been leased for an immigrant home in New York, be purchased and a new immigrant home be built in Boston, an old folks' home in Omaha, a deaconness' home in Chicago and a sanatorium for consumptives in Colorado. LOYEfSLAYS THREE AT SWEETHEART'S DOOR Louisville, Ky., June 14.A visit by a trio of men to an apartment of a woman resulted last night in the death of all three at the hands of Clarence Sturgeon, her lover. W. J.- Brunner, 26 years old, W. H. MeMichael, 45, and an unidentified man about 30 years old, all went down before the deadly aim of Sturgeon, a young man of 21. According to Sturgeon's story, the three men appeared at the room of Daisy Jackson and called for her. Stur geon, who -was -within, denied them ad mission. He claims they were boister ous and began to kick in the door. Their threats were followed, accord ing to Sturgeon's statement, bv at tempts on the part of two of the in truders to draw revolvers, when he opened the door and confronted them. He immediately began firing, everyone of the bullets taking effect. HUGE SPLINTER DRIVEN INTO BODY OF WORKMAN tTourna*. Special Service. Mobile, Ala., June 14.News has reached here from Prentiss, Miss., say ing:: "A strip of wood, twelve feet long was hurled -point foremost by the sizer machine into the body of Louis Ethridge, at a. planing mil l. it penetrated seven Inches. Seven men took hold of the pro truding end of the stick and exerted all their strength and were unable to pull it out. It was necessary to saw off the stick even with the surface of the body, and In that condition Ethridge was sent to the Ship island infirmary. displayed wonderful nerve while efforts ware made to pull out the piece of wood at the hos pital.
