12 Ht a KILLS HUSBAND --THEN HERSELF Chicago Woman Shoots Husband While He Sleeps, Then Ends Her Own Life, (ftn .if I Journal Special Service. Chicago, Nov. 24.James Hatfield Delaney, president and treasurer of the American Shipping company, with of fices at 324 Clark street and with branch offices at 29 Broadway, New York, and St. Louis, was snot and killed while asleep in his room at 402 La Salle avenue yesterday morning by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown Delan ey, daughter of Charles Edward Brown of Willis Point, Texas, formerly pro prietor of the Hotel del Prado and a ^member of the Union League club. After firing one bullet into her hus band's brain and another which buried itself in the pillow beneath his head, Mrs. Delaney, while in the attitude of prayer, placed the muzzle of the re volver in her own mouth, falling dead within a few feet of where Delaney's body lay. The police are looking for two wo men, frequently seen in company with "Mrs. Delaney, and three men, whose identity has not been established, in jhope that they may give information |which will explain a motive for theadvanced tragedy. 5 May Have Quarreled. f: fa the only motive which the rSthatcar lice ascribe for the double crime Delaney and his wife quarreled 'over some subject not yet known and that the shooting was the result of hot words and possible blows. A discol ored eye and a bruise on the woman's forehead is declared to bear out this theory. A quart wjhiskv bottle, nearly empty, and remnants of a lunch found In the room, the police believe, may Also have had something to do with the tragedy. Another story is that Mrs. Delaney has been consumed with jealousy of at tentions paid by her husband to other women. A theory ascribing an entirely dif ferent cause for the tragedy has it that Delaney, tho supposed to be a multi millionaire and the head of a $40,000,- 000 concern, has actually been finan cially embarrassed for some time, and that his wife, knowing of their im pending poverty, preferred death for both. Once an Actress. Mrs. Delaney at one time was on the 'Jrtage and graduated from the Chicago musical college, but gave up her career' then because of her husband's and father's objections. ROOT ON TRADE LINES Why the Natural Course of Events Turns Us South. Journal Special Service. Cincinnati, Nov. 24.Increased com merce with the countries of South America and moral support of Panama eanal construction were advocated by Secretary Eoot in an address at the .s twenty-sixth annual dinner of the Cin cinnati Commercial club. Besides Mr. Root, the club had as guests Ignacio Calderon, minister from Bolivia En rique Cortes, minister from Colombia, and Albert Yocham, charge d'affaires of the Chilean legation. Mr. Root opened with a word of .greeting from "one of the biggest and one of the beat all-round men in the ^--world. Secretary Taft, to his old friends in Cincinnati." Then, speaking of trade, he said: We know the possibilities and diffi culties of trade with Europe and with the orient, but few people realize how serious is the present agitation of the Japanese on the Pacific coast. If it goes on, he feared that trade on the coast will be seriously injured. Canada is following our course in building up infant industries, but to the south there is opening, a field that is almost limitless. Our ignorance of that great continent is lamentable. Our faces are now turned that way, not bv act of congress, but by the natural course of events. We will, he said, get the Panama canal built inside of ten years, and then the route from New York, Nor folk, Savannah, Charleston, Mobile, .New Orleans thru the canal and up the coast to San Francisco will come .the coast to San" Francisco will become That line runs close by the West In dian and South American seas. f. SHIP SUBSIDY FAVORED Secretary Bonaparte Will Take That Ground in His Report. New York, Nov. 24.At the naval ar chitects' banquet last night Secretary Bonaparte of the navy jiepartment said: i- "In my forthcoming report I shall say i that there should be a reasonable increase ytn the strength of the navy. I think we ,*,ought to be prepared to do something more than hold our own in the matter of .naval construction. "Unless our navy is sustained by the resources of an adequate merchant ma rlne, the navy must be unavoidably and, pf course, naturally increased. Not only .considering this matter from a naval aspect, but from an economical stand point, I submit that it will be a wise economy for our government to create that reserve of naval strength Involved fein the encouragement of a merchant ma- "'&- SCANDAL AVERTED 1 ._? -I^London Case Comes to NaughtGold Said to Have Been Used. ^Journal Special Service. *n London, Nov. 24.Society, while still 3 n agerl expectingintrigueof De .ahkely o'f i onaires news definit legal aQ inmiurnrw11,nnwirfiFIIIIHIIJI'IM'PTOJMBJiiiiihtfirtitilUkiitiiIMI11fl^nrIWilm- ]t'WjWli^UillI'aBia^iaawaBw^wMaaitfi^asp^W^g with the least "Ttteps on the part of an earl whose ^beautifuel wife is currently reported ton I j&-Rav *n nonplusse by a alla Anglo-American multi-mil- tee ^-announcement in the Morning Post of 1 a totally different character. East St. Louis, 111., Nov. 24.While a performance was in progress at the Broadway operahouse last night a horse, utilized in the last act to draw the heroine in a buggy, became frightened and sprang' over the footlights into the orchestra. The heroine fell un conscious to the stage and three wo men in the audience fainted while the horse floundered around in the orches tra pit, demolishing chairs with its hoofs and creating excitement in the theater. Presence of mind of a number of men in seizing the horse and sitting on it, at the same time admonishing the people to sit down, prevented a panic.
