J- N.- Lewis, Prop, 1 fir frH-- WITH THE ANIMALS IN CENTRAL PARK ZOO New York, Feb. 7. A 3-year-old ele phant at Central park has been trained to do In a week a trick which takes a dog of nice intelligence two months to learn. This Is a "cake wnlk," per formed by the elephant on her hind feel, while her fore feet arc up, keeping time with the music. "Haltlc" Is the name of this wise young elephant. She was captured a few short months ago in Ceylon, India, by Hagcnback, who later sold her to the 7.00. She performs many stunts which delight the' children crowding about tho cage, peeping through the barp, merry eyed and Joyous over the intelligence and good nature of the elephant. When the keeper lies down on the floor of the cage Hattlc walks up to him, and slowly, oh' ever so slowly and carefully, rubB her foot down over his body. This might result very unhap pily for the. keeper were Hattic less gentle lhali she is. It would not bo well for the keeper of the great bear at Bronx park to enter her cage with however friendly Intent, now that this famous Kusslan bear is the proud possessor of two young(cubs. It will be spring before these little bundles of fat can so much as open their eyes, so their mother will have a long period of nursing if her maternal Instinct holds out. It is most unusual for a bear in cap tivity to care for hor young. This same bear last year cast out her poor little cub, born on a cold January day. The cub was found by the keeper In a chilled condition -and though restora tives were given the little fellow suc cumbed the next day of pneumonia. The trainers and attendants In the Bronx zoo are very anxious that the 1 mother bear should enre for these little 1 new-comers and they are carefully i watching every movement she makes.
