WALL STREET ON
THE JUIET AGAIN
Inactivity Again Marks Work of
j Speculators in Great Gotham
' Mart.
NEW YORK, April 7. There were signs
of stalene?s In the market's upward move
ment today, and tlio action of prices bc
camo decidedly Irregular during the day.
This might have been cvon more marked
had it not been for the strong sustaining
Influence of the persistent upward move
ment in United States Steel preferred and
I the enormous absorption of the second
mortgage bonds, which mado the bnck
bono of the whole market. The auxiliary
polnta of strength woro few and were not
among the stocks of first importance.
Tho most Important stooks were In
clined to hang back and showed tho ef
fects of realizing on their' recent advance.
In splto of Nome items of news that might
have helped their advance. Among theso
wero good statements of February net
earnings by all the railroads in the so
called Harriman group, Including Union
Pacific and Southern Pacific. The weath
er map and the crop news continued fa
vorable to tho Southwestern grain car
vlers.but Missouri Pacific, Wabash pre
ferred, Kick Island ami Atchison pre
ferred wero the only stocks to respond to
n appreciable extent.
Tho strength of the United Slates Steel
securities was attributed to consideration
of the quarterly report. Amalgamated
Copper shared moderately in the strength
ofthe matal stocks.
The takings of United Slates Steel sec
ond mortgage bonds were alleged to be of
an investment character, and improve
ment was reported in tho bond market
gcncrallq and In demand for some high
grade investment railroad stocks, pre
ferred stocks Included. The extreme ease
of money Is a natural Incentive to this
kind of buying.
Money was loaned ovor the end of the
year today as low as 4 per cent per an
num, which makes tho holding of many
well-secured railroad stocks and bonds
attractive
The outward movement of gold in these
circumstances causes little uneasiness.
Yesterday's arrival at San Francisco or
$3,600,000 in Japanese gold indicates how
tho outward drain is made up at another
point. The heavy contraction In loans by
tho banks of England and Franco report
ed today indicnio the reflux tendency In
" thoso money markets following tho quar
terly settlements, and give a small prom
ise of any immedlato demand for monev.
"London was a buyer of stocks hero this
morning, and helped tho early advance.
Onlv In scattered Instances did tho rise In
stocks reach as much as a point, and tho
activity of the market was much curtailed
In tho latctr part of the day. The closing
was quite active again, but irregular
The bond mnrkot was active and firm.
Total sales, par value, $1,920,000.

ARE DISAPPOINTED
IN CONFERENCE
Dealers Do Not Find tho Results of
tho "Largo Influx Come TJp to
Expectations.
Conference may have been omlnently
satisfactory from the religious point of
view, but it seems that to many mer
chants, and to tho produce dealers, It lias
been disappointing. From the way things
wero shaping at the end of last and tho
beginning of this week, It looked as If
many peoplo were going to bonellt large
ly by tho great concourso of visitors. But
the verdict of most of tho largo whole
salers Is that business lias been nothing
like what could be expected, considering
tho crowds. Whether the visitors brought
their meals with them, or whether thoy
havo been bodily sustained by the spirit
of graco, the fact Is that they do not
seem to have been much addicted to tho
vice of buying this time.
Prices In most lines have been station
ary. Fruit took a downward turn yester
day. Both California and Utah rhubarb
was 1 cent per pound cheaper, and pine
apples wero made half a dollar less per
dozen.
Cauliflower went up 5 cents, but the
vegetable) situation remains tho same as
It has been for the last two weeks.
A large shipment of fish came In yes
terday. Tho only feature' out of the ordi
nary was tho largo slzo of tho striped
bass, most of them being as heavy ns 5
or G pounds each.

Grain and Provisions.
CHICAGO, April 7. A decided drop in
tcmperaturo in the north and west w:is
utilized today as a tonic In the wheat pit
hero against tho sympathetic effect of ex
treme weakness In corn. July wheat
closed ftc up; corn Is down lc: outs are
off ftfiftc, and provisions 12.fi27c.
Higher cables and favorable weather
were early factors In tho wheat market
diametrically opposed to oach othor. As a.
result prices held comparatively steadv
during tho early part of the cession.
Initial quotations on July were unchanged
to c higher nt 86fiS7c.
For nn hour there was little change In
the quotations, but auddonly sentiment be
came bearish, with prlcea declining rapid-
. i.in wL
ly. Weakness In coarso grains induced a
whirlwind of liberal selling by commission
houses and pit traders. With onlv a rela
tively sinnll demand July sold off to-SGfta
Later in the day a traders who was a con
spicuous llguro In tho corn pit became an
uctivo purchaser of wheat, presumably
with tho object of Indirectly forcing up
tho prlco of coarse grain In order to cre
ate a better market upon which to throw
his long corn. Tho Northwest was also a
fair purchaser, led on by a suggestion of
a postponement In seeding operations.
Sensational roports were received telling
of a radical change in weather conditions
In that section, snow and much lower
tcmperaturo supplanting all at once wide
spread mildness. The consequence was a
quick rally in prices. Many of the early
short sellers woro forced to cover, and
