Through. Trains to Vegas.
Instead of putting on a train to run
through to Moapa and return, the Salt
Lake Route officials are now delaying
the matter of putting in a new time
card until thev can see when the track
reaches the Vegas ranch. It is only a
matter of a couple of weeks and the
officials think It best to wait and then
put on a train to run clear through to
Vegas and back. This is about -10 miles
beyond iloapa, so it will be a good long
run, but one that will at once bring
the company handsome returns.
Railroad Notes.
If the Moffat road advertises for bids
for grading 40 miles out of Salt Lake
it will have to designate the route and
that is what the public here is await
ing. Vernal Is going to make an effort to
get a railroad through that town.
Tonopah seems to be the goal of
many roads.
The Virginia & Truckee will shortly
change hands or else the bluff of build
ing the Keelcr-Mojave lino will be-car-rled
out.
Nevada papers seem to take an Inter
est in The Tribune's story of the road
from Modcna to Pioche and Ely.
Nevada will be near the head of the
list this year In miles of new construc
tion. General Superintendent Buckingham
of the Oregon Short Line has gone to
Idaho.
The Milwaukee is going to do some
double tracking next year.
The work of ballasting is lively on
three of the local roads. The steam
shovels are working overtime these
days. ,
The English title for a wrecker or a
wrecking car is a "breakdown van."
Edwin Hawley has gotten the Alton.
It will be operated by him in connec
tion with other roads and principally
with the Rock Island. Tills Is the first
defeat the Harriman forces have met.

WHERE WAS FERNSTRGM ?
Absence of the Councilman Prevented
Negotiations With Davis County.
Failure on the part of Councilman
Fernstrom to attend a meeting which
he Is said to have arranged with the
County Commissioners of Salt Lake
and Davis counties In no way helped
the cause of the city In Its endeavor to
prevent the driving of sheep along the
roads in thickly settled parts of the
city. It is the intention of some of the
Councilmen to stop the driving of
sheep and cattle over Camp's lane and
Ninth North street, the streets now
used, and compel the use of highway
No. 20 to get the animals to the stock

Under the statutes of the city Council
Is required to ketp one highway open I
through the city for the travel of sheep
and cattle. At the present time there
are two main roads of travel, one east
and west and tho other north and
south. The road east and west runs
along Twelfth South street, below the
city limits, to Twentj'-first East and
thenco over Into Emigration canyon.
This is the only means by which sheep
men may take their herds to and from
the feeding ranges in the eastern
mountains. The city has Jurisdiction
over the land for ten miles up Emigra
tion canyon, and .it is understood that
the Councilmen would like to abandon
this highway, in order to protect the
water supply In this canyon.
The Council also desires to keep tho
sheep out of the inhabited section in
the western part of the city, and the
proposed meeting yesterday was to de
cide upon the use of highway No. 20,
on the western side of the Jordan river.
If the sheepmen arc compelled to use
the latter route It will be necessary to
erect a bridge over the Jordan river In
Davis county and the Idea wus for Salt
Lake City to join with Davis county In
erecting the bridge. The Salt Lake
County Commissioners appear to dis
approve of the plan If it will in any
way Interfere with tho use of Emigra
tion canyon. Tho Davis county Com
missioners are of the opinion that If
Salt Lake City wants to change Its
road in tho western part of the city,
necessitating the building of a bridge,
the city should stand tho expense
of the work.
All three of the Commissioners from
Davis county wero In the city for the
meeting yesterday. They said they had
been requested to come by Mr. Fern
ntrom and that they notified him that
they would come today. Mr. Fern
strom, however, did not show up and
nothing was done in regard to the matter.
Mysterious Troublo in Price School.
State Superintendent of Schools A, C
Nelson received a telegram from Prfco,
Carbon county, yesterday, which would
indicate that aomo serious trouble has
arisen in the school affajrs of tho place.
Tho message Is from the trustees and
asks the Superintendent if he can visit
tho school, stating that they need him
right away. Mr- Nelson says ho has
no Idea what the trouble can be, hut
will leave this morning for tho aceno
of the difficulty, V

MORE PAY FOR LIBRARIAN.
Salaries Wero Increased by Board of
Directors at Monthly Meeting.
Well-earned increases wcro made in the
salaries of tho librarian and her assist
ants by the board of directors of the
Free Public library at tho regular month
ly meeting yesterday. Tho salary of the
librarian, Miss Johanna Spraguc, was in
creased from $75 to 53-3 a month; that of
tho assistant librarian, .ili&s Julia Lynch,
from ?G3 to $75; Miss Lillian Price, Jo5 to
SCO, and Miss Estella Rellly. $50 to $55
This was the only matter of Importance
that camo up before the board.
The report of the librarian for tho
month of August, which was submitted
and approvjd, shows si good gain In tho
membership of the library. Tho member
ship on August 1 was 12,755. and on Sep
tember 1. KJ.S74, giving an increase of 119
members. Durlug tho month 2S3 new books
woro placed upon tho library shelves, ma
king tho total number of volumes in tho
library on tho 1st of tho month 23.979.
The receipts for tho month from fines,
lost books and reserve book postals
amounted to $12 90 There were eight
bound volumes and nineteen, pamphlets
donated during tho month to tho library.
Tho total number of books loaned for
homo uso was S733, and 2901 volumes wcro
loaned In tho rcadlnc-rooma Tho gain
In circulation over tho month of July was
SOG, and tho daily number of visitors to
tho library is estimated at 630.
