HIGH SCHOOL NOTES
Class Organized to Take Up Spanish
During Term.
The adoption of a course in Spanish
has at last been perfected in the lli(jh
school. A class in this language has
never before been a success in the
school, although it has been attempted
on several occasions. The attempt was
made again at tho midyear, which .iust
passed, and it will no doubt result in
a permanent High school course. No
tice was givon out yestorday that tho
class would bo organized, and about
twenty-five of the students reported to
take it up. Mile. Domenge has been
secured as a teacher of the course, and
the work will begin this morning. At
present there will be but one class, but
this number may be increased later on
in the year.
The "High school seniors roccived
their class pins from the East yester
day. The pins arc very unique. They
aro 14k gold, and are square, with tho
seal of the Salt Lake High school in
the center. About 100 of the pins woro
given out yesterday and about ten more
will be givon out later.
Toda' will mark the beginning of
the outside drilling of the High school
cadets. The boys have been drilling in
the halls of tho school building all win
ter, but beginning today will do thoir
work on the campus. Tho drill outside
will continuo until bad weather sets in
again.
FORT DOUGLAS NOTES
Tho latest addition lo tho enlisted
strength of the fort is Frank P. Ash
worth of Ogden, who "took on" yes
terday for Philippino service.
Fred Whitney, at one time a sergeant
of company B of tho Twenty-ninth,
was a visitor at the post yesterday. Ho
has long since abandoned the military
career of the "legitimate." Ho is a
membor of a company now playing to
Salt Lake audiences.
At the last meeting of the Spanish
American War Veterans Emil Johnson,
of the local force, was inducted into
membership at camp E. A. Wadgewood.
A considerable number of tho soldiers
at the fort are members of this pa
triotic order, not a few holding some of
the higher offices. They .intend to give
a dance at the Rcdmen's hall, city,
February 26.
The masquerade ball given by the
enlisted men at the fort, last night was
a vory successful affair from every
point of view. The orchestra of the
regimental band provided the music;
the costumes were varied, and in somo
instances elaborate. Some fifty couples
participated, and dancing was kept up
well into the night. The hall was gaily
decorated with flags and bunting and
the floor was ideal for tripping the
light fantastic.
Owing to the splendid weather pre
vailing at the fort yesterday, the
winter schedule of events was de
parted from to the extent of having
the regimental band participate in the
ceremonies. Guard mounting was a
formal affair, the band taking part.
Later on, in the afternoon an open air
concert was givou. which was much
appreciated by tho residents of the
pimauM iinu inn unusuaiiy jarge num
ber of visitors who look a run up to the
hill.
DANGER OP WAR
Outbreak in Central America Is Again
Threatened. Intervention Likely.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 There is
danger of an outbreak of war in Cen
tral America, although efforts at arbi
tration are being made in the city of
San Salvador in the hope of preventing
hostilities.
The Chicago has gone southward from
San Francisco, and the Yorktown, after
undergoing necessaiy repairs in dry
dock, will follow, stopping at cither
one of tho Salvadorean ports upon the
Pacific, or at; a convenient, Nicaraguan
port.
Scnor Cordova, who occupies the pe
culiar position of representative of Sal
vador and' Honduras at this capital,
talked today with Secretary Hoot in
regard to the situation. It appears thorc
is complaint that, the Nicaraguans arc
continuing warlike preparations and in
creasing their military forces on tho
border of Honduras. It is believed that
the good offices of the American and
Mexican Governments will be again in
voked to relieve the present tension.
