.i 8 THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, FRIDAY MORNING, APRIL 9, 909. W II MASON VALLEY fS IN MOESOICE Loner Tunnel Work Opening Big Body Smelting Grade Copper Rock. LLEW HUMPHRIES IS BACK FROM MINES Says Work -Started on the Smel ter Site and Plans Are Shaping. Not only docs the Mason Valley mine look extremely .rratifyiugr from the standpoint of developed copper re sources, but die affairs of the company itself are 'being: shaped to line advan tage, especially from the viewpoint of s-nielfer installation. Llcw Humphries. 1 consulting engineer for the company, I arrived irom inc. .Mason cnsiricr nuirs day morning, and. warn- seen by The Tribune was deep in plans destined to make the Mason Valley one of the busiest and most attractive red metal propositions in the west. The lower or 2Co. 4 tunnel, he slates, has developed ore for a space of ISO by .130 feet. The crosscut first pene trated eighty feet into what is termed the replacement ore body, then broke into the west vein resource, which has been crosscut for close to sixty J'cet. Mr. Humphries, howover. places the crosscut, at 130 feet, very little of this distance being anything but a straight smelting copper product, of t ho first grade. The management, had drift ed on the ore for a similar distance up to the time-Mr. Humphries left the property. When asked regarding smelting plans, Mr. Humphries stated that work at the Mason Valley smelter site was under way. Buildings are being erected for the accommodation of the eugiucers whoso task it will be to place- the site in proper condition to receive the smel ter. Work also is under way by the railroad interests, all which indicates that this camp is going to bo a mighty lively section of Nevada with the re sumption of sunshiny days. The entire camp looks better to .Mr. Humphries. Many of the smelter or ganizations are getting down to hard work. There have been some very good disclosures made recently on a group east of r.bc Blucstonc property, a prop erty being worked by- local interests. I CALIFORNIA LAWS ON MINING ARE EXPLAINED The new mining laws just passed in i California will probably stand Hie con- stitutlonnl test this time before the su- i preme court, and thus provide the stntefc for the first time in Its history a scries of 'statutes regulating the location and holding of mining claims, the provi sions, of course, coming: within those of the federal government and being sub sidiary thereto. With one exception the recent measure follows customs carried out by the miners for half a century. It expresses in statutory form the prac tice common In the mining regions of the west. Claims may be made as largo as the maximum area permitted by the national forest laws. 1500:a"0O; the boun daries must be marked and specified In the location notice; the notice must be recorded within thirty days after the lo cation Is made in the county recorder's offieo; mill sites may be located In the usual manner. o There Is no change In regard to the time of performing the development work. It must be doh in the year following the location, and every year otter Hint before the first of January. If one of the partners In co-ownership of a claim fails to pay his portion nf the expense he may be deprived of his interest There Is one point of diver gence of past practice. It refers to the neglect of any locator to perform the annual development work on his claim. This failure deprives him. of the right to relocate the claim until Hire years have expired after lh" claim has run out. This will force locators to do the annual work, or forfeit the claim to those who will. It will prevent relocating of claims uar after year by persons who never do a tap of work upon them. Most, If not all, of the other provisions have been In successful operation fn other states, and have received the sanction and approval of tho highest state and federal courts and the land depart ment. They form a simple guide to the prospector, and give to his location notice, when once recorded, the value of a- paper title, upon which all sub sequent proceedings, either for patent, or transfer, may be predicated. Sacra mento Union. I LL COLORADO ORE " STRIKE WOLF CLAIM? That the Carlsa has not abandoned all hopfc 'of securing a portion of the Colo rado ore chute is apparent from the way In which several prominent stock holders arc figuring at the present time. Several weeks ago, while the Iron Blos som management was bunting for the Colorado ore, friends of the Carlsa thought the ore might be found to swing out of Its regular course. Into the Carlsa territory, lying west or Immediately southwest of- the Slou.v. But when the Iron Blossom really developed the ore, the only chance the Carisa had left to get. a share of this resource was for the channel to swing to the southwest in a pronounced manner. Now It is hoped by many Carlsa atock holders that the Colorado body will swing far enough to the west to bring the same Into and across the Wolf claim of The Carlsa property. It Is conced'ed that the channel Is getting out of Its uorth and south course, leaning toward th west, but the question Is. will the ore swing sufficiently to the west to much this Wolf claim? When the Iron Blossom first encountered Its ore, almost everyone- Relieved, and everyone hoped, thai the definite trend of the Colorado or.-; hotly was determined, but litre still Is some ouestlon In the Carisa camp rela tive to the southern end of the resource. The Iron Blossom people claim the ore fo ran Indefinite stretch, and the com pany will confer a distinct favor on the world by hurrying tho work along thc southeru tall of the ore to clear up "these mooted ciui-stlons Dam tug. According to reports from the Gold L'irclo district of Nevada, tho Esmer alda properry has fallen iuto the hands of New York investors. The report jioes that. 31. II. MiiEgley of Got bam is the purchaser of this property, the pur chase price being- $30,000, $5000 cash j being paid down and the balance be- j 'iny duo in three months' lime. Mr. Mfigslcj- is said to be planning an ex tensive campaign of development work on this property. The Esmeralda from the early daj's of tho camp has been the scene of some very good ore disclosures. Tt is Jikowise reported thai the new custom plant, known as the Gey man mill, has been placed in shape for ac tive operations, the only thing now being necessary is securing the ores. According to all reports, there should be no trouble for the properties of tho camp to furnish all the food required by this plant, the question being suf ficiently good terms to induce the own ers to part with their gold ore. All that. Gold Circle has managed to ac complish was during the height of the panic period; the camp being a panic ! born proposition, and with returning prosperity to the country the district should bo one of the busy and success ful ones of the Sagebrush state. SIOUX DIVIDEND NOT TO BK EIGHT CENTS While the Sioux Consolidated company earned better than S cents a share dur ing the month of 'March, it Is not likely that tho April dividend will be Increased to S cents a share. General Manager C. 13. T30sc was In Salt Lake City, Thursday, and while he always dislikes to predict in advance dividend action hy the directors, he placed himself squarely on record against hoisting the dividend one month to lower it the next. lie Is decidedly in favor of striking n happy medium, which can be maintained steadi ly during the dividend era. Colonel Loose states that the Sioux is looking very fine Indeed, and that he never saw a finer locking ore body anywhere than that which the management is now work ing In. New York Mining Stocks. ORE AVERAGES HIGH IN SILVER AND LEAD New Work Simplifies Task of Getting to and Taking . Out Ores. David JOvans, e"0.rai manager of tlie .Plutus Miuinp; company, hears ex tremely good news from this Tiutic proposition, and the present work lays a foundation on which much can be expected by every one interested. On the northern oud of the property, in fact within ten feet of tho uorth end line, the management has developed a very good shoot, of ore, and it has been opened sufliciently to show that it tollows closely the surface croppings in extending in a southerly direction across tho properly. The significance of this is that from every present indication this strong ore channel will cross the whole length of tho property, and that means for 5000 iect. where the management is now working there is a vertical depth of about. .300 feet, and the old workings of tho fotro have been utilized to get into the ore. This necessitates consid erable useless cxpenso in mining and extracting ore, so the company has de termined on sending in a drift to greater depth, which drift will bo be tween fifty and one hundred feet in tapping no resources at a point where future extraction can be carried forward economically and with greater dispatch. Mr. Evaus states that the ore has ranged from six inches to five feet in width, averaging throo feet as far as developed. It. is a clean carbonate ore. averaging -lo per cent lead and 30 ounces silver to tho ton. Tho work, therefore, is assuming very interesting proportions, and tho management, never had more on whic hto bank for con tinuous, gratifying results. Boston Coppor Market. James A. Hartley Explains Scope and Details of the Now Enterprise. C. W. Hartley, who is promoting the Utah Stock and Mining Exchange, has issued a statement which will make clear many points now clouded with doubt relative- to tho new enterprise, lie s.tj's: ''The affairs of the Utah Slock and Mining Exchange are rapidly being rounded out, preparatory to getting ready to commence operations at the earliest possible date. The partitions in tho rooms are being removed to mako way for tho placing of the furniture, which has already arrived. "The board consists of 200 scats, fifty to be placed in the treasury, to bo sold at not, less than $500 each; 150 to be sold for $200. which will place in thc treasury of the company $30,000, which sum. loss the expenses of organ ization, will bo loaned to the bauks at 1 per cent intorcsl per annum. The dues will be $6 per month, which will give us an income of $000 per month, giving us a sinking fuiid, after all ex penses are paid for the running of the exchange, in the neighborhood of $300 per month, or ijtfGOO per year. Our interest account will produce in the neighborhood of $1000 per year, which win give us in the neighborhood of $1500 for a sinking fuud each vnar. plus the amount derived from the list ing of slocks. This moncv will all be placed in the treasury of the exchange to draw the same rnte of interest as the fund derived from the sale of seats. "Seats arc nipidlv being disposed of. and in the next, few davs the now ex change will bo ready to announce the members of the governing board, which will constitute the best mining talent in the state. A large number of seats have been sold in the surrounding towns and mining camps of the state, where- the new exchange has been re ceived with great enthusiasm, and T expect to dose out the remainder of the seats within the ncxl ten davs." COLORADO WILL NOT REDUCE DIVIDENDS A well-known mining man who stands about as close to ' I'nrle" Jesse Knight as any man In tho state, said Thursdav that If people believed the Colorado com" pnny was going to reduce the April divi dend from 8 cents a share, thev would be very badly fooled next Patnrdav lie states that Mr. Knlsrht has emphatically declared that the regular S-cent dividend will be posted. During the past week or so many vague rumors have been placed on foot regarding the Colorado, the most sticky one bHng that the company would not pay S conts In April. This man says that tho Colorado company has the cash on hand with which to meet this distri bution, and that the company is earning materially better than the present rate 0 profit distribution. There was a good advance In stocks to day. lSvenlng up for the holiday was completed early in the day. and during the. nfternoon prices moved up naturally. There were spectacular advances In such specialties as Cotton Oil. Wisconsin Cen tral. Lake Eric A- Western, and numer ous others of that sort, but the reprc- i scntatlve shares also moved up and closed with no gains. There were some reactions at the close, but not large. Wo look for further advances next week, par ticularly In the specialties, but Irregular In the leading railroads will not be surprising. Mutton & Co.jjStock Letter, New York. Strength In today's stock- market wn? a surprise to Wall street, as the general belief prevailed that a quiet and some what react lonao' condition would be seen.
