So much Interest has been aroused dur tlie past few weeks in regard to the divi dend possibilities of the Chlno company, and a'so as to the production ability of the Tiny Consolidated company, (hat the following statement of Colonel Charles Hoyden of llayden, Stone A Co. will prove timely to the many western share holdets. Mr. Havdeu says: The date of the. initial dividend to he declared on Chlno has not yet been defi nitely determined upon. Our policy is not to pay it dividend until we have earned and p'aced In the treasury a substantial cash surplus. The size of the Chlno divi dend will of course depend on the rale of earning and the prevailing price or cop per metal. If the present rate of earnings is maintained until tlie end of the year. Chlno will show a surplus for the atock cunal to 510 a share. Should the price i of copper hold well up io the current quo tation, ft is Hke'y ibat a -51 dividend Will be declared In January or February. Hut otherwise the fpinrlerlv rale will probahly be mti'Jo at cents, with .10 cents extra, the lntter depending upon the state of the metal market. Chino's cost of production is now down to f cents per pound. The condition of Hay Consolidated Is excellent. Wo have always eon tended that Ihe cost of production at P.a.v would be about 0 cents, per pound, and we arc now fast nearlng that figure. Th" pres ent cost is about 1ft cents, but as the work of organization and deve'opment continues this cost will rapailv lie. low ered until we reach the llgure of ! cents a first predicted. I may say that we arc making a very exceptional record at Chino. LACK". OF CONFIDENCE IN MARKETS EAST Tames A. Pollock & Co., hankers and brokers, furnish the following, received over their private wire ycslerday after noon: Paine. "Webber Co, Boston The whole story of market today was con tinued liquidation. The selling wis the most aggressive in the New York market, while local coppers were quiet. Lack of confidence keeps all buyers awav and there Js very little demand for" local stocks, -tt o look for continued liquida tion and lower prices before election. Logan fc Bryan. New York There was a resumption of heavy pressure particu larly on Steel, which was reflected bv general weakness in the stock market today. Iforclsn markers were unsettled and Paris and Pcrlin. as well as I.on fion were again credited with being heavy sellers of American issues. Then, too. there was quite a little scattered realizing and liquidation of weak ac counts owing to the near approach of election. Advices from the other side wore Indicative of a further advance in the German bank rate, owing to the fact that open market 'discounts in Berlin are (piolcd above bank rale and. as far as Paris was concerned, more or less uncer tainty was in evidence relative to prob able outcome of the monlhlv settle ments which begin on Thursday. Advices as to the situation In the P.ai ksns was most conflicting and it. is not as vet apparent jusl what the attitude of Russia and Austria. Is likely to he. The fears of further complications are doing much towards fostering alarm in financial circles on the continent, and New York has been foiccd to "cam the burden of the other side In the nature of affording a market on which stocks mav be liquidated. Much Is heard of our own strong I fundamental conditions, but as we have fiated from time to time, the same are now being subordinated to other consld- cralion?. such as International polities, the money strain and lack of an 'nKgrcs slve Investment inquiry. We believe jthat the Incentive to promote a rise In the stock market aside from that which might ensue as a consequence of an over sold condition or u temporary cessation of heavy liquidation is still lacking. De clines have been quite dnislle since wo. islarlcd to advise the siiio of stocks some four week, ti go and. therefore, it would ;not be at all unnatural should some sort lof a reaction be witnessed as ;i conse quence of too much compnny on sein I side, but until there, is a decided change I for the better in connection with adverse Influeuc-s now confronting the situation, we shall continue to advise against eit . t hush-sin on buying side. 6 22 Jjy main) jj MARKET QUIET, BUT j HOLDING FIRMLY j TOci'd.iy was a rather quiet day on ,'excliunge, the same difficulty being ex perienced In securing the zUoeks desired which lint; kept prlco range-; well from .i flumping tendency. Scelcy V. .Mudd. one of tho he.st known mining engineers of the country and who has been connected with the development of some, of Ihe greatest of the porphyry coppers, ha:i been making a visit of Inspection to .-jevenil Tonopah mines In the company of Frank A. Keith, late general manager of the Tonopah Mining company. ATler making an in vestigation of several mines of tho cump, Mr. Mudd made the following state niciil lo Ihe Tonopah Miner: "Tonopah both sunirlscs and interests me greatly on account of the c.Ntcnt of Its great ore bodies, the uniformity of the values, the very large loniuige of available oro and the high efficiency of Ihe milling plants which recover a great er percentage of the assay values than I anticipated. Is Much Impressed. "I was very deeply Impressed with the underground workings of the properties I vlsit"d. Rotli the ICs tension and the Belmont ar great mines, having re markable oro bodies, and being at the 0. vlrome west and east ends of the- pro ducing zone seems lo give great prom ise of further extension' of the vein sys tem. These properties a nil tho great number of veins in the Tonopah Mining company's -property prove the intense mineralization of tho district which in further evidenced by Ihe remarkable showing in the Merger mine, certainly the most Important recent development lu the district, not only because of the average high valuos of tho ore, hut also because of Its very strong vein, which lends great possibilities to the unproa pected territory in that vicinity. "Tonopah is a surprise and delight to line. The town is so prosperous, the mine; are developing so splendidly and tho people so filled with enthusiasm that my visit lias been most pleasant. It is a treat, to conic to a camp where there are very substantial reasons for enthusiasm, such as I sec here, in the developed mines and the prospects. Tono pah will, t think, sec very many Import ant developments in the next year, and 1. t Is undoubtedly a camp of long life. I am glad I have become lnterest"d In it." "I am very glad to again become ac llvcly Interested here." said Frank A. Keith. If this rate- Is maintained for the month production will be approxi mately 2,920.000 pounds. This figure com pares closely with that of September, when 2.'HP,000 pounds were, produced. At the above rate Miami is turning out approximately liu.OOO.OOO pounds of copper per annum. Production, however, is still much below the ligure predicted bv the management of -10.000.000 pounds per an num. It Is believed, when certain changes have, been made In the concimtiator. which include tho substitution of 'I lard Inge for Chilean mills, tha.t a higher ex traction will be possible, which will re sult in increasing production to normal. At the present price of copper metal of 173 cents. Miami is earning slighllv in excess of sn.oOG.OOO pur annum, or about SI. 10 pel share on the company's 71S. 235 shares of stuck.
