THE WASHINGTON HERALD

ITH the coming of spring, the styles in
hairdressing have grown even more ca
pricious; an awakening of new fancies.
During the winter season just closed,
there was a well-established vogue for co

The hair rippled gracefully in apparently a nat
ural manner, parted in the centre or at the sides,
and brought low over the forehead. The hair was
laid in a tight Vwirl about the head, caught with
decorative shell pins or supplemented with a braid
'which emphasized the contour of the head.
The effect aimed for was one of natural beau
ty, simple and elegant, yet individually becoming.
The style appeared admirable for the close-fitting
toques for outdoor wear and for the adoption
of the alluring little theatre caps.
The same coiffure for evening wear was swathed
tightly in Oriental fashion with chiffon, metallic
tissues, soft satin and velvets. This mode found
NEW COIFFURE SHOWS
BROADER, HIGHER EFFECT
Within the last few weeks a change has become
evident. The hair is not confined so closely to the
head all around. It is massed high on the crown,
also nearer the nape of the neck than formerly,
and shows great abundance of Nature's crowning
glory arranged unevenly in puff rolls. The latter
are laid crosswise, several large ones, or a num
ber of smaller ones, taking any becoming angle
The general effect is one of a luxuriant growth
of hair, rippling naturally over the bead, forming
gracefully into puffs in an unconventional manner,
the coiffure apparently dressed with the greatest
ease, without any attempts at sensational effects.
But, alas! In most cases boudoir confidences
prove quite to the contrary. The ripples are put
in by artificial means and the hair wound on false
rolls. Hair for this purpose may be purchased in
the shops, but a pompadour roll may be cut up
and substituted instead.
CAREFUL PINNING ADVISED
The hair is gathered together tightly with an
elastic band at the angle where the puffs are to be
massed, only a very little "ratting" is done and the
hair wound on false pieces and then pinned se
curely in place.
The hair is arranged low over the forehead for
the most part and the ears well hidden, or possibly
just the pink tips showing.

A frank parting of the hair shows in the centre
or a little to the one side, or just a subtle sugges
tion, which is even more coquettish.

.At a recent exclusive dance several of these
naughty little carls slipped from their moorings
and bobbed ont on the dance floor.
Of course, no girl had the. courage to pick up
the missing piece, so after a few whisperings, and
much coaxing; several of the men, blushing sheep
ishly, plunged forward and caaght up the curls,
thructing them in their pockets and retaining them
there, so no one was the wiser unless their memo
ries were very good.
This is not the first time I have observed wom
ankind in similar embarrassing situations, and in
several cases the false pieces were never regained.
The new coiffures shown on this page are among
the most approved styles. The first coiffure is
suitable for afternoon or for the theatre or dinner
with the addition of an ornament.
In all the coiffures there is the same tendency
to cover the ears. Sometimes just a deep ware in
the hair fills this mission; again, a little curl or
puff is employed.
The hair 2j parted coquettishly in the centre and
roll puffs massed high on the crown of the head.
To the right is an exquisite dressing of the hair
for evening. Ripples and curls are arranged in a
fascinating manner" with the hair massed low, fall
ing to the nape of the neck.
A most attractive ornament in platinum is worn,
with two pieces shaped like a bandeau with
placqnes at the side over the ears.
Where a low arrangement of the hair is be
coming and a desire for a coiffure of modest pro
portions, this one will surely recommend itself.
The last coiffure is an elaborate evening one
showing the hair done in puff rolls and swathed
in the Oriental manner, with metallic tissue caught
at the side with a sweeping aigrette.
BEWARE OF BANGS
Bangs have again pnt in their appearance and
while a number of yonng women have adopted
them, it is very doubtful if they will ever attain
the immense popularity formerly accorded them.
My advice to women is not to experiment with
this little infantile fringe of hair over the forehead
unless they are positively certain that it will prove
becoming. When the hair has once been dipped,
your fate, favorable or otherwise, must be philo

Children who are brought up without discipline
are wretched mentally and temperamentally.
There is nothing that makes more surely for a
child's peace and happiness than to be brought up
on lines of strict discipline, of careful, loving fore
thought. It is in children to respect authority and they
cling to the hand that disciplines in love with
a loyalty wonderful to behold. There is a look
of confidence and joy in the faces of children
where the father and mother are never mdnlgeoc
and erratic in their government.
Children readily bend to authority where they
feel it is planned 'for their own advance, -and with
out such a foundation the home and its-mainstays
will crumble away at the first breath of disastec
Cameos have returned to favor and appear mot
only as a brooch, but on the smartest hats and
for holding the draperies of skirt. As belt buckles
they are much in demand. The older the cameo
and its setting, so-much the better.
There is a great fancy at the moment to employ
sash ends, one or two, and of any desired length.
Very handsome ones are of velvet and satin witk
handsome silk fringe on'the edge. These sash- end
are worn directly in front or back or again at the
side. Fine silk, braiding is abo employed.
There seems to be a new fichu caprice launched
each day. They are usually becoming, especial
to slender figures and give shoulder width.
