As predicted In these columns less than a week ago, the committee appointed by President Young, of the Amateur Com mission, to investigate the charges of Jilanager Wilkinson, ot the St. Martin's team, of the Independence League, re garding the paying of players, reported that it could And no grounds fpr the charges, and all charges were thrown out at a meeting of the commission last night The players and managers' accused by Wilkinson wefe exonerated 'fully, as there was no proof against them, and "Wilkinson himself was accused ot offer McDonnell, the man whom Cornell is said to have paid, Jl to catch a game for the St. Martin's team. While Wilkinson did "not. make the offer himself, it came from a member of the St. Martin's out fit, and McDonnell writes that he over heard Wilkinson and the member talk ing Just before the offer was made him. This makes another Investigating com mittee necessary, and the following were appointed; C. J. Miller Kenyon. chair man; Thomas Klrby and Harry Fry, who wjll investigate the charge ot President O'Shea, of the Capital City League, "who preferred them on the strength of Mc Donnell's letter and the one of Presi dent Roakes, of the Independence League, that President Graf, of the Commercial League, stated he knew that players In the Commercial .League were being paid, but could not prove It. The committee will report at the next meeting, called for Saturday night. Graf said he thought players were be ing paid, but he was unable to obtain the necessary proofs to back up a charge and the committee will endeavor to get the proof. . James A. O'Shea, who made the motion regarding the Investigation of. Wilkin son, also made the motion read that' should he be found guilty he shall be barred from amateur ball, but. President Beach, of the District League, made an amendment to the motion, which was carried, stating that Wilkinson, should he be found guilty, shall be punlsKed as the commission sees fit. Several stormy word scraps came to light at the meeting, and for a time It looked ae If there would be nothing ac complished, but after much discussion the letter from McDonnell was read and the charge against Wilkinson preferred? Dlwer, Silk Carroll, and Ross, the three players whose eligibility was questioned, nere declared eligible, as thejy did not play professional ball after June 1. Secretary Shurtleff stated that the De partmental had failed to correct Its list of players ,to date. . The tnemorlam regarding the sad death of Frank S teener was adopted, and a copy of the same was ordered to be sent to the Sunday School League, and also io, Mrs. Stecher. Secretary Shurtleff was asked to look Into the men who are playing on one and on 'two teams, but after considerable dis cussion the matter was laid on the table for future reference. This practically sums up the business that was transacted at the meeting last sight, as the -majority of the -time was taken up with wordy arguments. Many strong words were used last night, and for a time It looked as if the Wilkinson charge would fall -on barren ground, but after President AMATEUR LEAGUE STASBINGS. BANKERS' LEAGUE. W. Playing the short field then, "Inky" put up a swell game, and was responsible for the. majorlty'of the Stenographers' runs that season. Always a good clouter, "Inky" Is one of the fastest men on the paths In the district, and Is a fielder par excellence. In 1909 and 1910 "Inky" played with the Manhattan team of the In dependence League, baiting well up In the charmed circle both years, rand leading the thlrd-sackers, where he has player the past few seasons. Last year saw Benjamin Franklin a member of the champion American Security arid Trust Company team, winner of the Bankers' League race " as well as1 the winner of the section B of the post-season series. Playing: the hot station for the Bankers, "Inky" easily outclassed the other third sack guardians, and had the leadership all to himself. Boston cluthaj first' Cornell Tigers or Sewage Pumping Station Cpuld Win Pennant in Local Boys The Tidewater League, the outlaw clr- u cult of Virginia, is playing about the same class vof ball that Is being put -up dally In the Capital City League. , Taken as a whole, the Cornell Tigers or the Sewage Pumping Station teams could Just about land the pennant In the "Jerkwater" organization. The Elizabeth City team, now leading in the race far the pennant, has "Yum" Moreland and Bernle Cleveland, products of the local sandlots. While "Yum" has long ben famed as a clouter of circuit wallops, his batting average to date Is close on to the .600 mark, and "Yum" never hit for that In the amateur ranks of the District. J3ernte Cleveland caught a falr game last season in the Suburban, as well as In the Sunday School League, but he was never put In the "star receiver" class. Not a great hitter, Cleveland Is a fair receiver and a good thrower, but Lodge or Noyes was acclaimed his superior by the majority of the amateur fans last year. Little Gill, who Is playing a great game for the Norfolk team. Is hitting In the charmed cifde, as well as setting the league on fire with his sensational field ing. Last season Gill put up a classy game for the champion Washington Her ald team In the Commercial League, but was never picked as a coming big leaguer. It Is hard to see Just where the pro fessional circuit has anything on what is conceded to be the fastest league In the District, namely, the Capital City or ganization, and it is for this reason that the writer does not hesitate to say that either the Cornell Tigers or the Sewage Pumping Station teams would come very near winning the pennant in the "Jerk water" league. "Cottony" Beach, one! of the come backs, twirled good ball for the Old Point team, but, owing to sickness, had to return home after being with the team about a month. "Cottony" re ceived a telegram last week to return. but It doubtful if the fair-hatred twlrler goes back before the middle of July, should he return at all Since his re- LAW WINS OUT. "Cottony" has pitched sev eral classy games, and It seems that he has Improved wonderfully since last season. One of the chief reasons for the poor article of ball that Is being put up In the Tidewater League Is the fact that the majority of the teams are playing several of the town amateurs, and the others are amateurs Just breaking Into the saladler game. No doubt there ore some good ball players in the Southern circuit, but they need season ing. Take those men In a year or two and you will find several of them in the big show. Moreland has received an offer from the Cleveland Naps, -and the Yankees have signed Don Broun, the rormer Laurel and Washington amateur, who Is hitting the ball for keeps for ihe Portsmouth team. The Virginia League Is not playing half as fast ball this year as last. No team In the circuit has as many good ball tossers or the same team work as was put up in the league last season Then the teams compared favorably with Clats B teams, but aa the league stands at present, it does not compare with a Class D organization.
