6 to 5.
"JUIJIE" SIMPSON THE STA$
-Smiling Freddy" Austin, the mirthful
mod diminutive mound artist at the, Tech
nical High School ball team, outgamed
the whole "Western aggregation yester
day afternoon with, a championship at
take, and" romped home a Thinner by a
core of to 6. The story Ilea In the
fact that Austin, perhaps by mental tele
pathywhatever that Is convinced thp
Western aggregation of heavy lutters
that he had tbtlr number and they be
lieved him.
Austin, as usual, was aided and abetted
by an overflow of Tech luck, which baa
become historical. The smiling heaver
was there with heaps of smok, 'however,
and was Just aa calm and collected when
the bassockA were flUed In the eighth as
he was at any stage of the game.
Gilt-edged support by the entire Tech
team, with the exception of a muff by
Ferry In right field and a fumble of a
nard-bit grounded by Montgomery, pavea
the way In the early Innings for the lc-
tory, one of the neatest aouoie piays
ever staged In a high school contest in
"Washington was palled In the second
by "Judle" SlmDson. Techlsiall-scholastla

getting tbm safe clouts aut of four
trips to the plate. Hardle duplicated
the stunt with a trio of blngl's.
Bennett pulled Austin out of a bad
hole In the flfth. when, after misjudg
ing a long drhe. ha speared the ball
"tilth one band as it was sailing home-
run-ward otr lis head. .
Tech set off the fireworks In the open
ing Inning, before "Western hsd an op
portunity to get set. Feake and Simp
son drew free passage to the Initial
sack and ambled to the plate on a
hefty clout by Hardle. Two more were
rarnered by the Bed and Gray In the
third, and Western went scoreless un
til the fifth.
The eighth inning rally of the West
ern team inrew a scare Into the Tech
roofers, butj the heavy artillery of the
Western ensemble, haunted by the white
teeth of the -"sailer, fell down at the
bat. It was a great day for Tech and
Freddy Austin.

LOCAL BOB GET
;GHANCE WITH THE
U.S. LEAGUE CLUB
Burke, Brady, Heck, Hast, and
Kilter to Be in To-morrow's
Iine'Pp.
CLEVELAND OPENS UP
Manager Browne, of the local United
States League club, will give any ama
teur hall tosser, who can shqw him any
thing, a chance to make his team, and
yesterday had Edmond Burke, of the.
Vfaerley club, of tbe Northern Associa
tion, playing center field.
To-morrow Manager Browne will have
young Hupt. of the Southland tribe of
the Independence league; King Brady,
of the LofBer aggregation of the same
circuit, and Fred Heck out In uniforms,
besides Al Fisher, who Is holding down
first base at the present time.
Owner Mockab.ee stated yesterday that
he Intended to give the local boys all
the cfiance in the world, as the club la
owned by local people, and he Intends
to use local talent.
No game will be played In the outlaw
league to-day. aa It is an off day in the
circuit. To-morrow the Cleveland aggre
gation la booked to start tbe first game
of a series of three, and the real test
of the strength of the circuit win be
known. While Cleveland Is scheduled.
It Is not known positively lhat the club
has left the Ohio city, and should It fall
to arrive here, the league will be killed
In this city,
Owner Mockabee has received word
from Cleveland that the club will b In
"Washington to-morrow morning, ready to
play ball, and with that as a guide, li
having scleral needed Improvements
made at the park. Mockabee said last
night:
The financial difficulties with the dif
ferent players were settled, and every
thing appears bright for the club In
Washington. The Western clubs will In
vade tbe East while the American
eague teams are In the West, and we
should be) able to draw good crowds at
every game."
"While nothing has been done as et
in regards to the playing of Sunday
games at United States League Park, as
the field at Fifteenth and H Streets
will be known In the future. It Is an as
sured fact, that a game will be attempt
ed nexi Sunday, if another club Is in
town. By playing: Sunday ball, the Sen
ators will be able to more than make up
for the week day loss, should there be
any In the future, and will be able to
weather the storm.
Tbe cancellation of the game in Cin
cinnati Yesterday may have some effect
on the league, and may also tend to put
the other clubs to tbe bad. The Cincin
nati club had been counted upon as be
ing one of. the strongest In the circuit.
and now that It appears to be going un
der, something will have to be done at
once,, to save that franchise.

George Browne's Senators lost a- hard
fought ball game to the Reading aggre
gation yesterday In the United States
League, the final count being 7 to 3.
Jeff Pfeffer started the mound work
for the locals, and up to the seventh In
ning the visitors could not even see the
ball, but In this round the crowd from
Reading put the ball game on Ice.
It was not all Pfeffer's fault, al
though he was touched freely in the
clos'ng Inning, as errors, both of com
mlsslbn and on.laalon, gave the Uitors
several runs, apd cut off a couple ot
tollies booked for the home crew.
Jack Patience, who covered third base
for the locals, put up a rattling good
game, taking care of seven out of eight
chance tn great shape. Ills patch of
Sbeckard's foul fly in the opening stanza
was easily the feature play of the fray.
Edmond nurko, the speedy outfielder of
the Waverley club, held down center
field for the Senators. Score:
