A new method of getting tenants for
vacant flats has been practiced with
great success by a landlord In New
York. The Idea Is so novel and has
proved so successful that it is hereby
given with the hope that it may solve
the problem of gettin; tenants for wor
ried owners of vacant properties In Phil
adelphia. Taking advantage of the pre
vailing trading stamp craze, the New
York man advertised that so many trad
ing stamps would be given every month
for every dollar paid as rent. He rlghUy
argued that as the trading stamp has
been successfully used to stimulate other
lines- of business, it might be used suc
cessfully to stimulate the demand for
apartments. His conclusions proved to
be correct. His vacant flats filled up
quickly with a class of thrifty tenants,
to whose women folk the trading stamp
proved to be an irresistible attraction.
This owner now declares that he haa a
better class of tenants than he ever had
before, and th-tt his rents arc paidjwlth
a punctuality which he never before'es;
perienced. In consequence he Is an en
thuslsst on the use of the trading stamp
to stimulate a demand for dwelling ac
commodations. Many Philadelphia builders have been
accustomed in the past to offer a month
or even two month rent free in order
to fill their houses, and during the past
three jears some of them have been
obliged to make still greater concessions
to secure tenants. None of them. how.
ever, as far as Is kno vn. has ever used
the trading stamp as an attraction. Tha
Idea looks so ridiculous that it would re
quire some courage on the part of an
owner to try It, but as it haa been used
so successfully In this particular In
stance there la no reason why It might
not be equally successful in renting soma
vacant dwellings in Philadelphia. It Is
the wife and the mother who, aa a gen
eral rule, selects the home, and the ex
perience of business In other lines is that
the trading stamp has proved an irra-
ststlble attraction for them.
