' Search for 'a pretty young; girl with a weakness for finery and a passion for furs is being made by the police, who) believe that she either perpetrated the robbery of furs, valued at SBO, from the show window of the store of 8. Saks, at U13 F Street Northwest, yes terday morning or Instlsated the 'theft. Suspicion is. directed toward an un usually sttractlva sjrl. whose actions In the vicinity of the fur store 'within the last week caused comment among- the clerks. Not more i than eighteen years old is this suspect, according to the police, nd her beauty has crested In terest among; promenaders in F Street for the last year. ' While detectives admit tht It la a tax on the credulity to ascribe so daring; and clever a theft to a mere slip of a girl, they repeat the old adage that fact is stranger than fiction, and confidently pre dict that the truth of the sdage will be proven In this case. The time of the theft is confined to three hours, the period between 5 and 3 o'clock yesterday morning. The rob bery was discovered at S o'clock by Mr. Saks himself who srrlied at the store at that hour to take charge of the work men who must work on the Sabbath to meet the demands of the rush of the busy fall season. Time of Robbery Deflnlte. The robbery could not have been com mitted before 5 o'clock because the thief used a copy of a Sunday morning news paper which did not leave the prera until that hour. Thla paper was folded and placed against the plat glass of the shoe window. A new hammer, evidently purchased for the purpose. as struck against the paper until the glass was broken. The paper muffled the sound of the crashing glass. Throueh the hole in the olate glass the thief stepped Into the window and selected a Persian Iamb cost worth 30o. a muff and an ermine collar set valued at 1330. These furs were taken from models and several minutes was required to remove the pieces from th wax figures. An expert window dresser, it Is said, could not have remo ed the furs In less than live minutes. It would have been simple for the thief to have stepped from thes how window Into the store, where a stock conserva tively valued -at more than tlM.000 was on display. A hundred sets of silver fox furs formed but one part of the display. As soon as Mr. Saks discovered the theft he telephoned police headquarters. Boardman Takes Charge. Inspector Robert H. Boardman, assist ant superintendent of police and chief of detectives, himself went to the scene. Within half an hour a score of plain clothes men and the entire force of the First precinct were at work on the mys tery. A brief Investigation convinced the police that the robbery was far from or dinary. A "good" thief In police parlance, a professional would not have been satis fied with the few pieces stolen. The question of a woman having figured In the theft was. taken up. and. it was. soon learned of the mysterious action of the girl who has been loitering In the vicin ity of the store for a week. This girl. the police learned, stood In front of the show windows, gazing at the furs for hours on several occasions. A description of the girl was given the police by the store employes who watched her. She was so poorly dressed as to eliminate the possibility of her be ing considered In the light of a prospec tive purchaser, the police were told, but ber mode of dress easily gave the Im pression that she Is an ardent devotee of style and an admirer of costly finery.
