ITS ANNIVERSARY
8. Kami, Sou ft Co. Celebrating
Opeaiaf ,-f BuiaM Slae-
feei Tears Ago.
This week; la anniversary week at the
store of S. Kann, Son tc Co. It marks
the nineteenth year since the establish
ment of the firm, and In honor of the
occasion the bis; store Is decked In Its
gaudiest and receiving thousands of vis
itors daily. Special decorations and dis
plays Inside and out hare been devised
for the celebration, and the army of
salespeople 'has been working its hardest
since Monday morning; to display to the
multitudinous callers the Immense stock.
Nineteen years ago 8. Kann. Sons ft
Co. began business in "Washington Jn
one small room at 711 Market Space.
Now' the Institution Is a veritable city,
peopled dally by 1,000 employes, where
everything from a meal to a diamond
tiara may be purchased. Even politics
take their place with the rest of the
wares handled at Kann's. They seem to
have solved the solution of the present
paramount political problem the Identity
of the next President of the United
States about aa satisfactorily as most
of the political "dopesters." In the win
dow to the east of the main entrance the
three entrants In the political race are
seen making for the White House Wil
son on the donkey, Taft on the elephant,
and Roosevelt on the Bull Moote. The
spectator stands breathless to see which
one is going to reach the eminence first,
but at 'the crucial moment each slips
back and stsrts the Journey afresh.
In another of the windows Is a "floral
display that has caused comment by its
beauty. Rosea and chrysanthemums are
plied together in profusion. This has
the distinction of being a window dis
play in which there is no merchandise,
a thing unusual with department store
window dressing.
Inside, the same Ingenuity has been
used to beautify the big store and make
it attractive to the public Especially
fine goods are tsstefully displayed. Spe
cial concessions In price have been mule
and many striking Innovations have
been devised. Even the waitresses In
the restaurant, are garbed for the occa
sion In special uniform. ,
The host of salespeople has been given
no small amount of attention by the
firm, and their wants are recognized and
cared for. There is a mutual benefit
association that pays sick and death
ben'flts. There are rest rooms for the
employes; a dispensary under the charge
of a matron trained to meet eery emer
gency of sickness that may arise, and
there is a sanitary lunchroom.
Since the opening day of the anniver
sary week of the proprietors. Messrs.
I.ouit, Sigmund. and Simon Kann. sons
of the founder of the store, and George
S. De Neals, the manager, have been
receiving scores of congratulatory letters
on the success of the occasion, and the
store has been thronged dally with a
crowd almost beyond the powers of the
salespeople to attend to.
