Representative Anderson Introduces
Bill to label the Impure
A bill amending tne pure food and
drug law so as to enable the government
to prescribe a standard beer, and'requlr
lnr brewers and other dealers to label
bottles, barrels, and kegs with a state
ment setting forth the constituents of
the product, will be introduced in tne
House next week by Representative Syd
ney Anderson of Minnesota. Mr. .Ander
son a bill will propose tnat compounds"
and "imitation beers shall be labelled as
distinguished from pure beers, and that
such labels shall set forth for the benefit
of the consumer whether he Is getting a
real malt product or something else.
In a decision drawn up by the Acting
Solicitor of the Department of Agricul;
ture. It Is held that under the present law
the government has no authorlty-to pre
scribe a standard for beer.
In framing his beer bill Mr. Anderson
will be guided largely by the experts of
the Department of Agriculture. He will
attempt to fix an arbitrary standard, as
Is done In a number or European coun
tries. In addition to th.e standard that
will be prescribed, Mr. Anderson will
write a taxing feature Into his bill Ha
will proceed along the lines that were
followed by Congress in the framing of
the filled cheese and oleomargarine acts)
