RECEIVERS FOR NEW HOTEL.
Six Creditors of the Powhatan File
Petition In Court.
Justice Barnard yesterday appointed
receivers for tho Hotel Powhatan, at
Eighteenth Street and Pennsylvania Ave
nue rvorthwest The hotel was opened
October 12 last, and the appointment
of the receivers followed the filing of
a petition by six creditors of the hotel
company. J Barrett Carter. Thaddeus
C. Dulln and Elnood S Duvall, Jr. were
appointed receivers and their bond was
nxed at S30.000.
Plaintiffs In the suit are G. G. Corn
well & Son, C, Engel Sons, Dulln &
Slartln Company, Mllburn. Helster &
to, . u. Moses Sons, and tha o. A.

filed to forestall a threatened suit by
out-of-town creditors, who demanded to
be given a chattel mortgage to secure
their claim and to have an attachment
According to Clifford M. Lewi m
ager of the Powhatan, the receivership
was asked In view of the fact that an
out-of-town creditor has been pressing

is merely temporary, as tne notel Is en
tlrely solvent and doing a profitable busi
ness. Not only is the hotel well filled
aX present, but Its bookings for the In
auguration will nil the house.
The Powhatan will be continued un
der the management of Mr. Lewis, who
will conduct it with the same high
standard which has made It so popular.

Action Follow Refusal of Henry to
Take Chairman Pnjo Into
Confidence.
A bench warrant was Issued yesterday
for the arrest of George G. Henry, of
New York, a member of the firm of
William Salmon & Co , bankers who was
Indicted jesterday by the grand Jury for
declining to answer certain questions
propounded to h'm by the Pulo com
mittee of the House of Representatives,
conducting an Inquiry Into the existence
of an alleged "Money Trust," The re
fusal Is alleged to have occurred January
7 last.
The true bill charges a violation of
sections 101 103. and 104 of tho Revised
Statutes of the United States, which
makes the refusal to answer a question
of this kind a misdemeanor. Punishment
by both tine and Imprisonment Is pro
vided by the statute following conviction
In the criminal court The line is fixed
at not less than J100 nor more than 31.000
and Imprisonment In Jail for not less
than thirty days nor more than one year.
Other Indictments Included Percy West,
housebreaking and larceny; Henry Gar
rison, forgery and uttering; Levy Kett
ler, housebreaking and larceny; George
W. Day, violation of food and drugs
act, and Robert Brown, nonsupport.
PANIC REGULATIONS

The adoption of certain regulations by
the Commissioners to obviate the possi
bility of serious consequences in cases
of panic in moving picture theaters, wa
urged by Benjamin P. Glbbs and J. Clin
ton Hlatt, representing the Columbia
Heights Citizens' Association, upon Com
missioner Cuno H. Rudolph yesterday.

selection of the proprietor, should bo
required.

INDIANS WOULD DODGE TAXES.
ned Men Come Here to Protest

Objecting to be taxed as citizens of the
United States, fifteen Pueblo Indians, rep
resenting about 25,000 civilized Indians
in New Mexico, wearing gay clothes and
earrings In their ears. esterday appealed
to Representative Fergusson of New
Mexico against the action of the New
Mexico Legislature, which holds that
they should be taxed under State laws.
The Indians are now the only ones in
the United States entitled to vote, but
they would prefer not to vote and avoid
taxation If one must be accompanied by
the other. They will appear before the
Senate Indian Committee this week.
They are said to havo enlisted the sup
port of the Secretary of the Interior in
their effort to escape taxation.

It contains the announced plan of dis
integration of the two railroad interests,
one in tho other, and provides a plan

ditions and transcontinental freight
transportation.
A recommendation Is made that the
District Court approve tho agreement.

ment that has been reached between

Sheriffs Must Par Tolls.
Comptroller of the Treasury Tracewell
vesterday ruled that police officers.
Sheriffs, and others who captured de
serters from either the army or the navy
must pay telegraph tolls advising the

savs that SM Is ample for the reward
and the expenses incident to the arrest
of deserters.
