George McBiide's ailing hurling
staff rsvartsd to form yesterday.
Arry Courtney and Jim Shaw, two of
th? "ailingest" of the lot. again demonstrated
their inablity to stand the
gaff. and the Nationals succumbed
to Mack's rejuvenated Athletics,
to 1.
The Athletics collected some eleven
hits during the afternoon's pasUmins:,
and the wonder of it all is
that such heaUthy bludgeoning,
coupled with seven passes and a pair
of costly errors, was not productive
of more than a mere half dosen
tallies.
Rollie Naylor, who started the
game for the opposition, was wild
land for the most part ineffective,
but his steodiness in the pitches
prevented the Griffs from tallying
on all but one occasion. Mack finally
decided that he was tempting
fate a bit too much and" derricked
him after the sixth. Guy Rommel
took his place and frustrated the
(home talent without much difficulty.
Andsome Arry looked good far
Just three innings, Witt's single in
,'ths. Art being the only hit charged
up agrainst him in tlv>se frames.
1b the fourth. Welsh led off with a
single to left. "TUlie" Walker forced
him at second and Johnnie ,Walker
skied to Rice, but a walk to Perkins
proved 'Arry's undoing. Dugan
promptly singled to left, scoring
' -Time ' Miller made a wide throw
to the plate on this pl?iy. and Gharrity
relayed it wild to Harris to
catch Dugan. who was on his way '
to second. The ball skidded out to
center field and Perkins tallied.
Arry was in trouble from the <
start in th? next session. Naylor i
poked a double to center, but was i
nipped off second by Gharrity and
O'Rourkf O'Rourke was tempo- I
rarily knocked out on this play. 1
but resumed after a five-minute interlude.
Witt drfcw a walk and
Jimmy Dykes plastered a double to
.right. Witt taking third. Welch
drew a walk and so did 'Andsome
Arry. Erickson taking his place. 1
Tillie" Walker hit to O'Rourke and
with an easy double play in sight.i
Harris dropped the ball. All hands
were safe and Witt was across the)
pan. Krick easily disposed of the
next two hitters.
The Griffs made their only tally
In the sixth. Shanks opened with
a single, took second on Gharrity's i
fly to left and scored on O'Rourke's
Texas I-eaguer to right. Judge also i
hit in this inning, but Harris* foul
pop to Perkins ended the rally.
The A's counted another in the.
seventh at Shaw's expense. Dykes i
drew a walk, went to third Oilj

CAKPENTISR'3 TRAINING
CAMP. Manhasaet, July *
Georges Carpentier returned to
his training camp here tfc's at"
ternoon anU declared thftt- he
knew ro man in the world in the
class with Dempsey. He said he
put forth every ounce oC hl?
strength in the light.
On Carpentier's behalf, however.
Uls old friend. Thierry Mal'
let. acting as spokeamsh. Said
that an injury to Carpentier a
thumb, sustained eight days ago.
was a contributing cause toward
hla defeat. Mallet -aid not Attribute
the defeat of the Frenchman
to this cause, however. Mallet
said that Georges received
the Injury eight days ago while
working with a Sparring partner.
Uls managers did not care
to say anything about <t at the
time, as they felt that announeement
might be taken as preparing
the groundwmrk for an ex

games* governor for the people the
State of New Jersey ever had."
Hon. Edward Edwards. This the
great Slate of Jersey placed its
official seal on the prize fight.
The gloves were already tried on
by the principals some days ago.
The weights wsre announced as
Carpentier 172 and Dempsey 188.
They had a string on those
scales." remarked some one when
Dempsey's weight was announced,
and Johnny Dempsey winked. Te^
Rickard was. presented. , coming In
lugging his cane and smiling
sheepishly. Shook hands with both
men.
l>escamps remained over near
Dempsey's corner while Dempsey
was being introduced. There was
mild, applause as Dempsey stood up
and bobbed his head with some
hooting. Then Humphreys presented
Carpentier am the idol of his people.
and big demonstration ensued,
especially in the higher priced
seats. Carpentier bowed and smiled.
The men and the seconds grouped
together in the center of the ring
for the final instructions, and
.Dempsey seemed cool, with every
nerve settled, although up to then
he had been pawing in his corner.
At 3:17 the bell rang. Carpentier
was the first to lead, letting fly u
right hand which Dempsey blocked.
The fight was on.
The rpen closed in almost Immediately
and Dempsey began ripping
right and left hands to Carpentier's
body. He varied this by overhand
clouts to Carpentier's face. A few
blows broke the skin~"on Carpentier's
nose and the blood appeared.
Carpentier let fly a right handuthich
hit Dempsey flush on the
chin, but Dempsey shook it off and
marched in. The champion was so
much stronger than the Frenchman
that he swung him around in the
clinches. Toward the close of the
round he hurled Carpentier from
him and the Frenchman fell limp
across the lower ropes on the west
side of the ring.
In the second round. Carpentier
again landed his right on Dempsey's
chin and shook the champion. The
crowd roared as Dempsey's bronze
body fell back, and from that moment
no one could doubt the danger
of Carpentier's punch.
Carpentier was on the defensive
through the round, falling back,
Dempsey following on smashing
away at~Carpentier*s bleeding face.
The Frenchman showed himself a
clever boxer, evading many of
Dempsey's shots, and always hold- j
ing that deadly right hand ready.
It was much the same during the !
third round, Dempsey landing the i
most blows and Carpentier taking]
them with amazing fortitude. The
Frenchman seemed **ery tired at the
finish. Then came the fourth and I
the final.
Stanford Wins
Tennis Title
Phil Neer, of California,
Beats Harvard Man
In Finals.
PHILADELPHIA, July 2. ? For
thexfirst time in the histor/ of intercollegiate
tennis, Lelana Stanford
University wen the championship
at the Merion Cricket Club today,
when Phil ( Neer beat J. B.
Fenno, jr., of Harvard, in the final
round, 3?6. 6?*1. 6?4, 1?6. 6?1.
In fact. It was th'; first time that
the title had gone west of the Alleghenies.
Neer had the punch at the
Inish and deserved his championship
honors.
Neer appeared bothered by the
heavy courts and rain. He ran the
entire tenis gamut. frqm superhuman
3hots to the most erratic
playing imaginable. It was his
mighty service that ultimately carried
him to the championship. Hi*?
back-hand game was not near as
good as it had been during the
earlier matches, while Fenno, wn<?
holds the New Hampshire State
championship, was also bothered by
the rain, as he continually had to
atop to wipe his tortoise-shelled
glasses.
