OFFERS TO REDUCE
LOCAL GAS RATES

Annually.
Voluntarily offering a reduction
>f 19 cents per 1,000 cubic feet of ;
(as, the Washington Gaslight and
the Georgetown Gaslight Companies
yesterday presented a statement
to the Public Utilities Com- ,
nission showing that they are earnng
less than 6 per cent on their
idldings. It was also shown that
If the present rate is reduced 10
;ents, that the earnings of the company
would be cut $450,000 a year.
The present rates range from $1
per 1,000 cubic feet, when consumption
is more than 1,000.000 feet a
month, to $1.2? per 1,000 cubic feet,
when consumption is less than 100,1)00
feet a month. The proposal to
reduce the rates applies to the rate
of $1.15.
Robert O. Luqueer, a gas engineer
of New York, stated that the net
earnings of the companies for the
year which ended May 31, 1921,
amounted to $705,070.67, which provided
a return of 5.97 per cent
William McK. Clayton Introduced
into the evidence Information he
had received -that salaries and
wages of employes of the gas company
In Baltimore had been reduced
10 per cent, thereby saving $200,000
annually. Col. Kuts said that the
commission had no power to compel
a reduction In salaries, but that
it could render a decision as to
whether or not the public utility /n
question was operated upon an economical
basis.
