North Carolina Christian Advocate. fTlHE NORTH CAROLINA ANNUAL CONFERENCE M. of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, having de termined to issue a weekly paper bearing the above name, the subscribers are authorized to issue this prospectus. It is intended to publish a family netcespaper', which, while it shall be religious in tone and sentiment, and main tain the doctrines and usages of the Methodist Church, shall be devoted to all the interests of Xorth Carolina, and furnish intelligence for every class ot readers. In size and appearance the new periodical is to be equal to any of our church papers, while it will surpass them as in adaptcdness to the wants of our people. The entire insufficiency of thecxisting " Advocates" to the necessity of our position, forces us to the publication of our own " paper ; and we confidently expect the hearty co-operation of the members of our church in all parts of the State and Conference, and hope to make the paper so interesting and instructive as to attract patronage from the public generally. The " Advocate" will be published at $1 50 a year, and the first number will be issued as early as practicable after the next session of our Conference. It is believed that the publication 'will be commenced on the 1st of January, 185G, It is desirable that as large a subscription as possible be obtained before the Conference, and the ministers and all - others interested in the enterprise are respectfully urged to secure aud forward the names and address of subscribers, particular attention being paid to correctness in writing : the names of persons, post offices and counties. Those who may have no opportunity of subscribing through the agency of our ministers, may write directly to Rev. Wm. if - Pell, Fayetteville, N. C. The payment will be expected upon the issue of the first number. The location of the publishing office will be determined at the session of the Conference. WILLIAM E. PELL, WILLIAM CARTER. RUFUS T. 'The writer of this volume accompanied an invited party from New York to assist at the opening of the Panama Railroad. He has given a full and interesting account of tliat great industrial enterprise from its inception to its completion, with a graphic and instructive description of the romantic country, whose eastern and western shores are connected bv the iron bands of the railroad. The sketches of a tropical climate, of the curious natural history of the Isthmus, and its peculiar social customs aud habits, which are presf nted by the author in a style of unflagging anima tion and gayetv, make his work one of the most attractive book's of travel ever issued from the Aincricairess. With a Selection from his Letters, edited by Mrs. Austin 2 vols. 12mo., muslin. " The work now issued comprises an inartificial me moir of Sydney Smith, giving a brief and unpretending narrative of his life, but liberally spiced with specimens of his good sayings and a limited selection from his correspon dence, consisting almost entirely of letters written in the abandon of friendship to a few of his intimate associates. Bat becoming fat, in an onluckr moment, like the man who had (frown "riei sMughta rids . an ass," aud bad, therefore, gotten above bia fellows, the ' " Animal " leaned the ban of Its accustomed field, and the ' , next thing we heard of him, be, like a man tnrned politician ' from preacher, . was pining lor the good things ta life, and ' ' -no doubt. like the silly lamb of old that elnded the sight of V. the shepherd, and got into the thick woods: wbich was " found to be infested with wolves, he wished himself back in V. his old range. But the bars had been'put another rail high- ' cr and he couldn't get back ; besides, he had grown so lean that he could not jump.- '..-'.. ' j-.t'Sf It is said that bought wisdom is the best in the world, if it dont cost too much. A mighty true saying; one in,, which there is more of truth than poetry or romance, and. " in view of this old saying and the Animal's experience, ' his old friends need have little fear that' he will at any time -hereafter cut the same caper, again. He'll kick an man that would intimate such a thing. : 4 The Live Gira&ewill then be neutral It will be de-1 voted to fun, to the news, and literature. It will be made the vehicle of publishing many a thought to the world; funny, grave and instructive, that would have wasted it self on the air "as summer roses do," but for its columns, it will seek every opportunity to turn grave and nnintcr- " eating matters into pleasant land agreeable incidents: up set all ill-natured humanity it meets with and mould It anew; expose all rascality wherever found, whether in Church or State (that's promising a great deal.) or in the social circle, and keep a strict watch on the press, literary, religious and political, and see that each keeps its bounds. The ci'iiens of Raleigh know well enough the value o f such a sheet, and would not do without it another year for ' half a million. Why, since the exit of the Animal from 'their borders, they have had more bad luck than was ever heard of before. More Trusts have been made, more liens been given iipnn property, more assignments made, more quarreling and nghting, more drinking of liquor, more meanness generally, and more ill hick than ever was known at any period since the great plague in Egypt. Now this is as plain as daylight, and the only remedy for such evils is to trot out the Animal again. So I think. Now, this is the proposition L shall make to yon. I want an assurance of your willingness to patronize the Animal; and to get that assurance I shall give yon full opportunity to correspond with me and to send in ail the names that can be secured. . ' If 500 names can be seenred, we shall have" no fears of the success of the Animal. He will soon grow fat when he be gins to take exercise, and then he can plead his own caso, it not wnn eioqueut woras, at least with an occasional kick at the boys. ' . - .. it has been intimated to me that the connection I sustained . to the " Carolina Pennant" would injure the Animal since the Pennant " had suddenly expired and left many of its subscribers in the suds. I have to say here, and I hone it will satisfy every body, that I had ho interest in the " Pen nant. " I wrote most of its Editorials for which I should have received something according to agreement, but I did not. I have tried this to-business and it neither pars nor suits my genius. I want a broad hemisphere, a wide hiti- tune, and nobody to divide with me in toe spoils, ' Then, friends, we now understand each other. I want you to send me vour names between now and the first of January; if enough respond, the "Animal "will makn.his. bow ; if not, no barm done. , : " .
