THE EVEN1NGSTAR.1 Tricks of ShorkeeF'" t The London Builder .V" tne"and' ?xl' r;,u s?-^srfn this region. We quot* Great facilities for fraud ?r . ^torded b# th* kiDd of small weieUir_~ tttAChlnfes of*eti used by fishmnrger* ?La bakers, and Otl acconnt of the greater cumber of fulcra (aix), and the treat kress of tbe disk and tbe scale-pan in which the comestibles or the weights are re* spectively placed There is now an itinerant borer and seller of gold and silver objects tiaveline In the country districts of Hucimg bsmshhc, who u*esr\ small pair ol st^t l scales especially made for counry use. His weight* are, of course, stamped, and are correct, but one arm of tbe beam of the scale la longer than the other. When he buys, he puts the article in tbe scale fitted to the. long arm. He nun ages to travel about, It** an affable ba?man thathe'is, with a horse and gig; and we only bope that a sharp horsestealer may some day manajre to sell ahnrs* with one leg longer than the other to this distinguished member of the gigocr^cy. Among some other engineering bnxters, to bacconists hay? a particular preference for dy namical meansof increasing their gains. Hold ing np the scales in the left hand, the two or three ouncer ol tobacco are 1 riskly banged up on the scale, which has the effect of causing tbe whole to c.uickly vibrate cpand down, and then, aft^T two or three oscillation*, producing an apparent balance, the scales are quickly bange?l on to tbe counter, and the parcel is wrapped up and sold. It is not an unusual thing to observe publicans' pewter pots with the bottoms stuck up, so that vriih this and a carefnl development of froth on the top, the customers get very much less than the ??impe liaj ^pint." But theu, if the beers be adulter s ?J with say, "nuxvomica," these two nega tive frauds produce a positive benefit to the tor iiimtr upon the same principle that a ho inopaihic quack is, perhaps, safer than an alo patbic quack. In the same way the bottoms ef di y measures are sometimes driven up, brass weights are filed away, and tbe leaden plugs of cast-iron weights are partly cut out. At the sam? time, these latter expedients are too clumsy to be at all safe, and are liable to be instar.'.ly detected by the inspector. Tbe steeivarus used by itnerant fruitsellers grea'Jy facilitate fraud, even when correct wei* tats are used. As it is, weights?particu lar!/ brass weights?are continually liable to get light, and tbis isespecially the case through the salt and grease furthering tbe effects of friction on the weights of sugar bakers, gro c< jis, oilmen and salt merchants. A great num l *r of the shopkeepers of the metropolis pay a 'gind of insurance premium against any un Jortunate results of the visits of the inspectors <ot weights and measures. They pay a certain cum per quarter to some weight and scale marker in the neighborhood, who examines at intervals the stateof the weights and scales, and engages to piy a fine which may result from their honestly defective state. This plan is no doubt very practical, and for our own part if we were inspecting weights and measures, vie should pav very particular visits to the shops not under tbis kind of super* visien. *1T A raournful catastrophe recently oc curred on Lake Superior. The steamer Lac La Bella dropped anchor at Ontonagon, a small boat passed around the steamer, the par ty giving her a beautiful serenade, and then put off for shore- In the passage, the boat up set drowning three ladies. t&~ The bridge which is to span the Ohio river between Cincinnati and Covington will cost a million and ? half of dollars, and in lenf th it will exceed the Niagara bridge some 40(i feet. It will be suspended !H) feet above hig h water, enabling the largest steamer to pass under without dilliculty. 07* A tram of cars on the Little Miami Rail road, containing members of the One Hundred and Sixth nud One Hundred and Seventv-flfth Obio regiments, was thrown from the track, three miles from Cincinnati, on last Thursday efterucon, and about fifteen of the soldiers were injured, two of them very seriously. JUT" A case is now pending in the Supreme 4'ourt in Brooklyn In which United States Marshal Murry is the defendant, and Mr. Leb beus H. Berry, the plaintiff. The complaint is brought of illegal arrest by the marshal, on charge of disloyalty, in August last. Yesterday the head belonging to the trunk and limbs of the body recently picked up at different places along the East river, was found near Fort Hamilton, New York har bor. Gen. Hooker is In Chicago.
