Frlday'll Be a Special Remnant Day,
N this day all broken assortments, odd lots, short lengths, remnants from whatsoever cause, are
offered at prices very much below their intrinsic value. There is no place in our stock for mer=
chandise that is not absolutely perfect and that does not furmiish a satisfactory assortment.
Remnants are the natura3 consequence of healthy trade, and we take this method of clearance.
The saving to be effected is very material, and in most instances the items are perfect. All remnants
are plainly marked and the original prices at which sold noted upon the tickets. Every department
throughout the store offers items of interest to careful buyers, and the collection for tomorrow is par=
ticularly interesting.

WANTS TO GET FACTS
Senator Beveridge Proposes a
Tariff Inquiry Commission.
WOULD NOT FIX RATES
Its Duty Would Be to Collect In
formation.
TASK THAT WOULD TAKE YEARS
Revision Before the Presidential
Election Opposed?Desire to Avoid
the Unsettling of Business.
"While T think our tariff should be re
vised to meet the new conditions that
have arisen and the changes that have oc
curred since our present tariff law was
enacted, eleven years ago, I am emphat
Ically against any proposal to revise the
tariff until after the presidential election,"
remarked Senator Beveridge to a Star re
porter today.
He believes that the intervening time
should be properly and usefully spent.
He declared today that if a tariff
Investigating commission, such as pro
vided for in the bill presented by
him the early part of this week,
should get to work at once it would
be impossible to finish work for at least
a year.
The commission proposed by Senatoi
Beveridge.. according to the terms of th<
bill, would be appointed by the Presi
dent. Its duty would be to investlgat
immediately the cost and production of al
articles covered by the tariff, the pricei
paid to American labor In comparison
with prices paid foreign labor, the cost of
raw material entering into the manufac
ture of articles used, whether domestic or
Imported, and all other facte necessary in
fixing duties on any article.
"By the very terms of this bUl," said
the Indiana senator, "no immediate re
vision is contemplated or Is possible. If
the bill were to pass today it would tak<
the commission at least a year, working
under fhe highest possible pressure, tc
make the necessary investigations.
Sees No Reason for Opposition.
"When the practical nature and limit
ed scope of my bill is understood by Con
gress I do not believe that there will be
any objection to It. I cannot conceive
how any man can take objection to hav

be revised carefully ascertained and laid

n? 8eem that at,y Person who
opposes such a comnronsense and practi

themselves discussed and made known?
I can understand how members of Con
gress would earnestly object to a com
mission to fix duties and t..js perform
the legislative functions of Congress; but
understand how any man in or
out of Congress can object to having the
facts investigated by an Impartial and
responsible commission of experts and the
result of those investigations feld before
Congress for its Information.
?n,A^/eneral retvl8lon of the tariff of

entering into a presidential campaign
would prolong that business disturbance
