ASHES OF THE LOS ANGELES-DISASTER.
' RIGHTLY UNDESTOOD, THE TRADES UNION MOVE-,
MENT IS THE SUREST WAY TO AN INDUSTRIAL DEM
OCRACY IN THIS REPUBLIC. WITH ORGANIZED CAP
ITAL UNCHECKED BY SOME SUCH ORGANIZATION OF
THE TOILERS, INDUSTRIAL FEUDALISM IN ITS MOST
VICIOUS FORM WOULD MAKE WHITE SLAVERY IN
THIS COUNTRY EVEN MORE HORRIBLE THAN THE
BLACK SLAVERY THAT COST SO MUCH OF PRECIOUS
BLOOD TO ABOLISH, t
But trades unionism cannot successfully employ the tactics of
plutocracy. Standard Oil may do with impunity what workingmeri
- dare not do. It may dynamite and burn" the plants of rivals to
destroy competition ; rt may steal the land and all the bounties of
nature beneath its surface; but workingmen cannot do the same.
Only through education of the general public to its real aim
" . and purpose can trades unionism finally bring" about industrial
v justice, i I
It would be cosier-, of course, if the common people outside the
ranks of organized labor understood, but they-' don't. And they
will have to Understand before there will be a square deal.
Organized privilege, which now seeks to enslave the people of
.this country, .will make the most 6f the McNamara confession. It
will aim to make the people believe that all unionists are McNa-
maras in spirit. It will do all in its power to create the impression
. that trades unionism is lawless and murderous. It will lie, bribe and
keep on committing tfte.crimes it has learned so successfully to com-
mit with impunity.
But organized labor will have to take the other tack.
IT CAN'T BEAT CRIMINAL CAPITALISM AT ITS
OWN DESPERATE GAME.
It has learned these tricks from capitalism, but it can't get
away with them. ".And IT IS GOOD THAT LABOR CAN'T
;FOR ITS ULTIMATE TRIUMPH IS ALL THE SURER
THROUGH LEGITIMATE METHODS.
Anyhow, thijg is not the time for hunting some goat to punish.
There has ,been punishment "enough. 'False leaders who foolishly
try to wjn against plutocracy with plutocracy's weapons, will have
to step aside.
CLEAN, HONEST'TRADES UNIONISTS ARE NEEDED
, FOR POSITIONS OF LEADERSHIP, BUT THEY MUST BE
BRAVE ENOUGH TO BE RIGHT, AND WISE ENOUGH TO
KNOW THAT LABOR CAN WIN ONLY BY CONVINCING
-THE COMMON 'PEOPLE,-OUTSIDE THE JRANKS ' OF
