" By Dr. James B.McFatrich, ' ' ' ' -
President Chicago Board, of , Education.
We have- $50,000,000 worth of I
school property in Chicago. The
buildings are used 1,000 hours a
year; they should be used 3,000
hours a year.
If they belonged to a- big "busi
ness enterprise they . would be
used all the time, and' because
they belong to the public they
should not be kept closed the
greater part of-thet year.
Now we are going to ajlow the
people to use their -school build
ings for amusement-purposes any
night they desire. Light Wd heat
will be provided i.ree. Dances
will be held two or three times a
week. ,' "
We -want' to' see the schools

pleasure, of the community. The
children are to have what they
want. They may do anything
they please that does not violate
the law. They may get up any
sort of entertainment they wish
dances, theatricals, debates and,
in addition, the board of educa
tion will, provide moving pictures,
stereopticon lectures, informal
talks, and things that will interest
parents as well as children.
