for preventing "outrages of the
mayor and his venal council",
which they loudly declare, bor
der on "anarchy."
The. ousting of Arnold is not
the only thing that some strong
minded, presevering citizens hold
against Mayor Speer.
, Some time ago, citizens of Den
ver, decided they'd like to try the
commission form of government,
and see if it wasn't a little bit bet
ter than government by Speed's
Democratic machine.
As the initiativeand referen
dum is in operation in Denver,
these dissatisfied citizens circu
lated a petition calling on the city
council to hold a special election
to decide about the commission
form of government.
There were plenty of signers
for the petition, and it duly was
presented to the city council.
"Vhich "venal" body, having
objections to aiding in their own
consignment to political oblivion,
and artistically pigeonholed the
petition.
Now those citizens who wished
to try out the commission form
of government have lined them
selves up with Arnold in the fight
over the assessor's office, and are
gojng to hold a mass meeting to
consider how to apply the axe to
Mayor Speer.
Henry will be at that meeting.
He will explain how much he
loves the commission form of
government. Henry inay even
offer himself as a candidate for
mayor under the commission
form of government.
And that's the situation new,
Arnold points-out tfiat HE was
elected by the people of the city
and county of Denver, while
Hilts was APPOINTED by Ma
yor Speer, who, in turn, was elect
ed Mayor of the Democratic ma
chine. Arnold today received scores of
telegrams from all over the coun
try urging him to "put it up to
the courts and stand pat."
And that's what he's going to
do.' He's going to ask the Su
preme court to take original jur
isdiction, and until the courts set
tle it, Henry wishes everyone "to
distinctly understand that he is
assessor.
