Richeson was pastor of the lit
tle Baptist church at Hyannis,
Mass., during the summer of
1910.
Avis Lynnell's home was at
. Hyannis. She was baptized into
the church by Richeson.
Richeson openly made love to
Avis. The girU loved him. No
engageemnt was announced. But
all Hyannis took" an engagement
for granted.
And Avis wore a diamondring
given her by Richeson.
Richeson's language from the
.;pulpit became such that the
Sturdy fishermen - of Hyannis
forced him to resign the pastor
ate. Soon after, he accepted the call
of. the Immanuel church, of Gam
bridge, the most fashionable
: suburb of Boston.
Avis Linnell followed the man
she loved. She became a music
--student in a Boston conservatory.
Violet Edmands, heiress and
possessor of $500,000-in her own
right, was one of Richeson's new
-congregation.
She was much older than
Richeson, but her wealth dazzled
- the pastor, and he made love to
her and won her.
And he forgot Avis Linnell.
- But he did not forget her
-enough to tell her that he was en
gaged to Miss Edmands
March 22 of this year, the
Richeson-Edmands engagement
was announced in the Boston
.papers. The wedding was set for
October 31.
August 31 of this year, Riche
son visited the Hyannis fair with'
Avis .Linnell, and even then the
girl knew nothing of the heiress
who had supplatned her.
She still was wearing Rich'e-!
son's ring, and she told her,
friends they soon were to be mar-i'
"Vied.
On October 10, Richeson pur-
chased a quantity of cyanide of
potassium "for the purpose of
killing a dog" at a drug store in
Newton, Mass.
October 14, Avis Linnell was
found dead in the bathroom o
the Boston Y. W. C. A. She was
sitting in a chair, her feet in warm!
water, clean clothes lying by her,
side.
And her death was due -to cya
nide of potassium poisoning.
October 15, a police autopsy,
revealed that Avis Linnell wag
soon to have become a mother.
The police whispered murder,
and that same day, Richeson fled
into hiding at the home of his;
fiancee, Violet Edmunds.
October 18, he retained an at
torney although his name had
not been mentioned by the police,
October 20, police officers sur
rounded the Edmands mansion,
and arrested Richeson.
October 31, the date set for the
wedding to Violet Edmands,
Richeson was taken into courti
and the preliminary hearing post
poned. - ""
November 13, Richeson, pro
testing his innocence before God
Himself, was arraigned on the
charge of murder, and his trial
