The steel trust's attorneys can talk all day and all night for a
year aliout industrial conditions and the pressure of modern busi
ness, and any other bunk they like, they can't change facts ; nor can
they make any human "being believe in his soul of souls that work
ing a man twelve hours a day for seven days a week for $10.5( a
week is right. . G
That is a thing that no man can believe, not even if they want
to. Why, not even J. Pierpont Morgan, or Judge Gary, or Charlie
Schwab, or Andy Carnegie, or any other poor millionaire who has
had his boots licked by Wall street for so long that he has forgotten
how to be human, can believe it.
It's just like it in Chicago. We've had a Vice Commission in
Chicago that made a long and a horrible report. That report was
vouched for by honorable men, and right at the beginning, it got
down to the meat of the affair by saying that the women of the un
derworld, the most to be pitied creatures on God's earth, are re
cruited today from our big, swell, showy department stores.
The Vice Commission printed a lot of figures to prove that. It
didn't need to prove it. Everybody knows that the department
stores pay, on the average, $6 a week.
And you know, and we know, and the, -department store mil
lionaires know, that a woman can't live in Chicago on $6 or less a
week, and keep body and Soul together. '
f God knows that some women do it for a long, long time for
after all, women have more backbone, and more courage, and more
endurance than men. But in the end something happens to them.
.Some commit suicide. Some "go wrong."
The Vice Commission "investigated" and found all that out,
and told about in plain words, and today conditions afe just the
same as they were before the Vice Commission reported.
Perhaps the -newspapers that wouldn't print the news because
their souls newspapers have souls, you know were bought and
bound by the advertising of the department store millionaires, are to
bjame for that.
There even has been defense of the department stores, talk
about the law of supply and demand, and that sort of flapdoodle.
But that didn't deceive anybody, not even those who made the talk.
It's just as with the steel trust you and every other human
being in the world who gives the matter two minutes thought,
knows it is wrong.
So what's the use of all these loudly heralded "investigations ?"
What we need today is some man like Abraham Lincoln, who
will not talk about how wrong things are, but who will get up and
DO something not for glory, nor money, nor reward, but just for
the sake of the common people, whom Lincoln said God must have
