Spokane, Wash., Feb. 12. The
biggest concrete monolithic arch
in America has been completed.
It is the span of the Monroe
street bridge and is 281 feet long,
71 feet wide. It holds the record
by one fo6t. Its closest rival ,is
the Rocky River bridge at Cleve
land, Ohio.
The bridge is now 965 feet in
its full length, arid is solid con-

crete. It was built in practically
one year and 11 months less
time than was consumed in build
ing the Rocky River bridge or the
Walnut Lane bridge at Philadel
phia. It was built by day labor,
rather than by contract and cost
5500,000.
During the course of construc
tion two workmen were killed,
two seriously and 46 slightly in
jured. More than 50 per cent of
the cost will have to be paid to
Spokane workingmen when the
last payroll is satisfied.
As the world's record a bridge
now under construction at Pitts
burgh, Pa., will beat the Spokane
bridge with a single concrete
archway of 300 feet, while New
Zealand has a concrete span, not
an arch, of 320 fee.
