J Rev. John Horton, formerly
pastor of the Congregational
church at Beecher, 111., was found
guilty of bigamy this morning at
Joliet. Under, the law, he will be
sentenced to' from one' to five
years in the penitentiary.
Amanda Brenker, the young
woman of Beecher whom Horton
deceived, and whose love and
confidence he violated, was the
principal witness against him.
She controverted the plea of Hor
ton's attorney' that bigamy had
been committed' in Cook, and not
Will county,' and that he could
not be tried there."
It was less than a t year ago
that Horton came to Beecher.
His magnetic ' personality soon
made. him a favorite there, and
he finally selected Amanda Bren
ker as his prey. He -was then
known under the name'of Hardin.

Horton tore the veil from his
past life when he wrote a letter
of resignation to his church, men
tioning his family in England,
and eloped with Miss Brenker
to Chicago. Investigation dis
closed the presence of the other
wife in" England, and'the bigam-
