THROAT-CUTTING
Notice how they pro
pose to help out those mill
ionaires of the wool trust
who have grown fat under
employes have gone cold
and hungry on average
wages of S6 per week?
So long as those Lawr
ence men, women and chil
dren of the mills were con
tent as slaves, they were all
right. Now that they want
more than the $6, they are
classed as "undesirable for
eign labor," and it is prd
posed to relax the strictures
of the law prohibiting im
portation of skilled labor
from foreign countries un
der contract.
Fibre and Fabric, organ
of the textile industries,
boldly advocates 'amend
ment of the law so that skilled
foreigners can be imported to
take the places of "the horde of
degenerate foreigneis" who have
so degenerated that, they can't
; make $6 cover the cost of rents,
food, fuel and clothes.
But Massachusetts bids fair to
come t oher senses. She is begin-
'ning to see that starvation wages
means disease, immorality and
lawlessness in their worst form,
and so she is moving for a mini
mum wage system. She is trying
to say to the labor which is con
tent in its servility that it is bad
for the general welfare, and to
brutally greedy capital that it
shall not skin both producer and
consumer without limit.

"Well, Tommie," said the joy
ous Slithers, "you must con
gratulate me. I am going to
marry your sister."
"Oh, thunder!" growled Tom
mie. "Why, Tommie!" , protested
Slithers. "Don't you like me."
"Oh, yes, I like you well
enough," said Tommie,' "but I bet
Mabel a pound of candy you
wouldn't be fool enough to ask
her, and she bet you would."

we must say amen to that.
