Now, for the first time in the
east, these foreign born workers,
in large numbers, are' rebeling
aga'inst evil working conditions,
a"nd wages unequal to life's de
riiands. Nearlv 50,000 are out in
New England, eastern Pennsyl
vania, Xew Jersey, New York,
with strikes threatening in many
cities. Fdr the first time they are
showing what sot of stuff they
are made of.
It was the same class of work
ers who rebelled at Lawrence,
showing remarkable fortitude
and rear Americanism in the face
of the now notorious official an
archy of all the police' powersof
city and state.
As a result of that strike it is
estimated that 438,000 textile
workers, all over the country,
will receive between $12,000,000
and $15,000,000 a year additional
wSges, employers having volun
teered raises 'to fores-tall strikes
and unionization. The. strikes
now in progress" are in mills
where employers refused to fol
low the Lawrence lead or did not
give enough to satisfy.
