will, I shall try to show the politi
cal system, which controlled and

my iews of the conduct, and of
the ideas and methods and
actions "of the men who managed
and schemed political results and
governmental control and who
schemed for special privileges.
I shall show how the public
service corporations, large and
small, through their political and
financial control, dominated the
city, and sometimes the state
governmerit, and corrupted pol
itics. I shall show the relations be
tween big business men and big
and little politics. I shall show,
how Mr. Herrin and othersr
through their corruption and al
lied influences, secured special
I shall give a full statement of
the attempt to grant the Park
side company a street railway
franchise ovCr Twentieth ave
nue, where no street cars should
have run. I shall tell how money
was promised and paid for that
I shall show in full the negotia
tions between the gas company
and the city fortbe fixing of gas
rates and the conversations and
interviews I had in that connec
tion, and I shall tell how the deal
was put through.
I shall show how mqney was
used both by the Pacific states
(the Belt) and the Home (the au-
tomatic) telephone companies.
I shall give fully all the facts A
connected with the overhead trol
ley permit of the united railroads,
which was a deal put through be-
fore the fire, and no't a hold-up of,
the company by myself, the
mayor and council in the time of
stress and emergency after the
fire, as the united railroads has
tried to make out.
I shall give a full account of the
famous Santa Cruz convention,
which nominated James N. Gil
lett, and-of my meetings and con
versatoins in regard t that con
vention. I shall give, with all tfee cir
cumstances', accounts of all my
meetings and conferences with '
Cajhoun, Ford, Mullaly, Umbsen,
Green, Crocker, Drum,' Halsey,,
Detwiler, Herrin and others.

behind the scenes ivhich will be,
of benefit to them, and also, in
some measure, to pay for my part
in the events I shall relate.
