ESCAPE FROM FIRE AT SEA TOLD IN PHOTOGRAPH
This remarkable photograph illustrates the thrilling experience
of the 31 passengers and crew of the steamship Ontario, which
caught fire-at sea off the Long Island coast and was beached, as the
picture shows, to save the lives of those, on board.
The fire was discovered late at night in the hold, filled with'
cotton bales. Captain William J. Bond instantly headed the ship
toward the sandy beach. The passengers were' taken off in small
boats.
