ing a meeting in a chapel, became
wrought up to such a high pitch
of excitement that he cried out:
"I see befo' me ten chicken
thieves, ihclu'din' Calhoun Clay!"
Instantly Calhouir Clay rose
and left the church. He was
very angry.
The next day he brought powr
erful influence Jo bear, upon the
minister, who promised to apolo
gise. So at the meeting in the
chapel the old minister arqse.
"I desire to retract mah la.st
night's -remark," he began. "I
said: 'I see befo' me ten chicken
thieves, includin' Calhoun Clay.
What I should have said, dear
brethern and sistern', was: 'I see
befo' me nine chicken thieves, not
includin' Calhoun Clay!"

Recently down in Kentucky, a
local "bad" man and a gentleman
of color sat down in a quiet cool
place in the woods for a sociable
game of poker. After a few pre
liminary remarks as to stakes,
etc., the white man startled the
negro by remarking:
"I don't mean to cast any in
sinuation whatsoever upon any
one in this gathering, but, nig
ger, if I eaich you cheating, 12
months from this day you will
have been dead exactly -just one
year."
