IS THERE A MURDER TRUST?
,An Editorial by Roger W. Babson, Financial and Economical
Expert. , '
Following the Titanic disaster a national conference was
planned to take action to promote the safety of ocean trevelers,
workers in shops and stores, theater-goers, miners, school children
and all others whose lives are at stake today through criminal negli
gence. There is no doubt about this conference being planned and that
it was well under way. I know because I haye seen copies of a
form of proposal for holding this conference and copies of a draft
of a letter which was to be sent to leading government and state
officials and presidents of the leading scientific organizations of the
,This conference was suddenly called off";, certain vested inter

meant that the workers and property1 of this country would have

Powerful interests can suppress a forma,! movement to hold a
conference on safety, but they canna't suppress the will of the people
to protect themselves from murdeY.
We must remember the Tifanic and the Slocum and the Re
public until adequate laws have been passed to make all steamship
companies that enter" our ports or ply our waters use a portion of
their dividends for the protection of the lives of their passengers.
We must remember-the Triangle shirt waist factory until laws
are passed compelling all factory "owners to use some of their divi
dends to protect thd lives of their workers. We must remember
