arms and took in the American
; Bridge Company.
Washington. Senator Mar
tine, N.N ., in urging 8-hour law
for all workers on government
contracts, said protective tariff
was making millionaires, paupers
and anarchists. Henry Cabot
Lodge tried to change the 8-hour
clause to 9 hours, but the other
senators were afraid of the "peo
ple back home" and left it 8 hours.
UNITED STATES LEAGUE
IS TOTTERING ' ,
Cleveland, O., May 23. The
hew United States league is on
the rocks. The first signs of dis
integration were shown yester
day, when at a league meeting
here, the Ideal club surrendered
its franchise, declaring it was not
satisfied with conditions in other
New York and Washington
are losing money. Fans will not
patronize the new organization.
Already several Washington
games have been transferred to
Richmond, and the series with
Pittsburg scheduled in the Na
tional Capital will be played in
the Smoky City. New York and
Washington may be dropped and
Buffalo and St. Louis Substituted.
Another city will have to be se
lected in which to place a team
o take the place of Cleveland.
