One day the soldier failed to answer roll-call, and after his name was written "deserter." He married that girl. Then came little Roy. But Uncle Sam pays $50 for a returned deserter, and in time the soldier was caught, courtmartial ed and sent to the penitentiary for seven years. The wife, whether in despera tion, grief, or because she was not strong enough to meet the battle of life, left the child with another woman and disappeared. The other woman could not keep him. Now, a friend, who became in teYested, is working day by day to support him, leaving the little tad at the Day Nursery while she labors m sweltering factory to earn money to "bring him up."
