One day the soldier failed to
answer roll-call, and after his
name was written "deserter."
He married that girl. Then
came little Roy.
But Uncle Sam pays $50 for a
returned deserter, and in time the
soldier was caught, courtmartial
ed and sent to the penitentiary
for seven years.
The wife, whether in despera
tion, grief, or because she was not
strong enough to meet the battle
of life, left the child with another
woman and disappeared. The
other woman could not keep him.
Now, a friend, who became in
teYested, is working day by day
to support him, leaving the little
tad at the Day Nursery while she
labors m sweltering factory to
earn money to "bring him up."
"I'm the overall boy," said lit
tle Willie, his black eyes dancing
as he contemplated his blue jeans.
"Yes, they are all overall boys,"
said Mrs. Pierce, "but they do'not
wear them all the time We have
some little books telling about
the overall boys and they are all
proucMo be overall boys."
"Fse good boy," chirped anf
other little tad.
"We have only good boys here.
We tell them that and they try to
live up to the reputation," smiled
