FOR PRESS PROGRESS.
It being the era of progress, re
form and purity, they are" after
the newspapers as' well as the
catsup men, the purveyors of "ben
zoate of soda, the grafters and the
impure judiciary. A bill is being
pushed in Congress to require all
newspapers to publish, regularly,
a list of their editors, stockhold
ers and bondholders, and in some
states, Massachusetts, for in
stance, laws have been created to
punish with a fine of $10 or more
any advertiser wlio causes an un
truthful or misleading advertise
ment to be published.
Why not? The people have a
right to know what influences the
publications that influence the
public and its servants in office.
The people certainly are entitled
to protection against liars who
are after their money through .ad
vertising. The movement for an honest
showdown by the newspapers will
be endoresd by the honest part of
the public press, for it will be to
their advantage that the frauds
and fakers in the business be
cleaned out, which they will be
when the character of their own
ership and their dependence upon
the "tricks of the trade" are ex
posed. o o
