WONDER WHY NOW!

Silence the other afternoon, while
the fireworks were popping over
at the Coliseum.
Suddenly a bellboy ambled in
and. out among the marble corri
dors, shouting: "Mr. W. J. Burns!
Mr. W. J. Burns! Mr. W. J.
By actual count, 14 men grab
bed their hats and beat it. Three
of them were U. S. senators, two
were Taft delegates and one was
a member of the Illinois legislature.
' Cherry Shortcake.
This is a sweet shortcake. Pre
pare the cherries. Let them stand
"with the sugar over them while
the cake part is baking. Mix and
sift (twice) two cups of flour, J4
cup .of sugar, 4 level teaspoons of
baking powder, a pinch of nut-,
meg and teaspoon of salt. Rub
in 1-3 cup of butter; add 1 egg
well beaten to 2-3 cup of sweet
milk. Mix on a floured pastry
board. Roll out
layer-cake tin in a hot oven 20
minutes. When done spread with
soft butter, then with pitted,
drained and sweetened cherries.
Cover the top .layer also with"
cherries. Sprinkle generously
with sugar. Top the cake with

Coffee substitutes are all right
if you like 'em. A good many
people don't. They are mostly
merely hot water flavored with
roasted grain just like the "rye
coffee" that folks used to use in
the north during the war when
real coffee couldn't be bought for
any price within the reach of the

ducer. In 1892 the mills of thd
country turned out 18,803 tons.
In 1910 the amount had increased
to 725,000 tons. The United King
dom comes next with 600,000 and
Germany follows- with 50,000
