tears" and was superstitious

Wallace street, demanded his
pound of flesh, from a 19-year-old
girl yesterday and didn't get it.
The girl was Anna Forrester,
3011 Lowe ayenue. Last fall,
Miss Forrester lost a $10 bill in
Veremis' store. She accused the
grocer and had him arrested.
Vermis proved he had not
taken th6 bill, and sued Miss For
rester for $1,000 for malicious
prosecution. He was awarded a
verdict of $35.
Miss Forrester did not have
$35.; nor could she borrow the
money. So May 16, Vermis had
her sent to the county jail for
debt, as can be done in Illinois.
From .May 16 until yesterday,
Miss, Forrester wasun-the county
jail for debt And she Was pay-
ing board there, too. County
Judge Owens oiled Veremis be
"Don't you realize this girl is
unable to pay you?" he asked.
"Then she's got to stay in jail,"
said Veremis, doggedly. "Fve got
the right to keep her there is she
doesn't pay, and I'm going to."
"Don't you think you are hard
on the girl?" asked Owens.
