SITUATION IS SERIOUS
London, July 8. With the "be
ginning of the eighth week of the
transport workers' strike, the
cause of the men and their fami
lies is desp.erate.
Starvation is threatening the
women and children.' Union re
lief funds are exhausted, and or
ganized charities are helpless to
cope with the situation. Hot
veather has made the death rate
among children, especially the
younger ons, high, and health
conditions are alarming.
Notwithstanding their desper
ate straits, the strikers declare
they will not, return to work un
til they are victorious.
The reports of the board of
trade show a falling off in im

consequence the central telephone
