SPEAKING OF HARD LUCK
This is a little story that must
be told in two parts.
Half of it is located at the loan
office of J. Richter, 2120 S. State
The other half is at the detec
tiVe bureau, La Salle street near
Time, 2 a. m.
A. Schultz, having a large
amount of leisure and a small
amount of money, decided he
would do a little artistic and fan
cy burgling to recoup his for
tunes. He decided on the loan
office of Richter as the place to be
burglared. It is close to the 22d
street police station, but that did
not worry Schultz.
He selected a sharp drill and
began boring a hole through the
front door. He intended to bore
all around the lock, take it out
and then enter the store. Schultz
was some driller. After a few
minutes' work the point of his
drill slipped through the door,
All was quiet and peaceful in
detective headquarters. The only
disturbing sound was the snoring
of a city sleuth. Outside on La
Salle street a milk wagon rattled
along, but the detqctive snored
Clang! Clang! Clang!
The detective awoke with a
start. Angrily he looked around
for the disturber of his nap. He
found it. The burglar alarm on
the wall was clanging away like
a fire engfne answering a call to
the stockyards. Hastily the sleuth
looked at th,e index to see where
the alarm came from.
It was the loan office of J. Rich
ter, 2120 S. State st.
A 'phone call to the 22d street
police station ordered the ser
geant to send two men to the
place to see what was going on.
Now the story switches back
to 2120 S. State st.
The two coppers from 22d st
hustled over to the corner of
State. Then they tiptoed along
in their best sleuthful style. Their
guns were handy. They peered
around the corner. A man was
crouched before the door boring
into Its' woodwork industriously.
They ran up and grabbed him. It
One of the coppers investigated
the holes in the door.
Schultz had drilled through the
burglar alarm attached to the
door, made the gong ring in the
detective bureau, and bored him
self right into jail.
