Michael McGinnis, chauffeur,
1850 Seward street, had seen the
tragedy. He jumped in after
Miss Mayers, and caught her as
she came up the first time.
The girl fought McGinnis
fiercely. Three times they went
down together, and then she man
aged to break McGinnis' hold.
She sank immediately.
McGinnis was rescued by the
police boat. The Smith brothers
were taken to the 22nd street sta
tion and held without bail, pend
ing the inquest. Miss Mayers'
body was not recovered.

MAJOR BUTT'S LAST WORD
Pawtucket, R. I., July 31. The
ocean gave up another grim re
minder of the Titanic disaster to
day. A message purporting to be the
last word of Maj. Archibald Butt,
aide to President Taft, was pick
ed up in a bottle off Block Island.
It read :
"April 16 Mid ocean. help
op a raft Titanic sinking no
water or food Major Butt."
